Overview

Take a trip to New South Wales on your Australia Vacation

Home to some of Australia’s most beloved icons and gateway to more than a few more, New South Wales is a great place to start any Australia vacation. Seamlessly blending a thriving arts culture with an outdoor lifestyle envied around the world, might make you want to stay.

Sydney is Australia’s oldest and most recognizable city. Besides having one of the world’s most beautiful harbours, its classic image of the Sydney Harbour Bridge rising above the white sails of the Sydney Opera House has welcomed countless visitors with the promise of what a trip to Australia might hold. Whether you’re enjoying a swanky night out seeing some of Australia’s finest arts companies at work, zipping across the harbour on a city ferry, lunching with the giraffes at Taronga Zoo, or stretching out on the white sands of Bondi Beach, Sydney has filled with life-long memories to suit any taste.

But the big city is just a fraction of the New South Wales story. Just to the west are the Blue Mountains, containing some of Australia’s most impressive mountains and gorge scenery. Explore nature tracks, Jenolan Caves, great opportunities to see Australia’s wildlife up close, the world’s steepest railway, and of course the beautiful Three Sisters rock formation, which has watched over it all for millions of years.

The national parks north of Sydney offer more natural beauty, mixed with an Aboriginal legacy going back thousands of years. Visit Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to step back to a very different time in Australia’s history. Along the coast north of Sydney, you’ll find some of the world’s most impressive white-sand beaches and waterway communities. With a more relaxed pace than Queensland’s popular coasts, the laid-back lifestyle here soon becomes addictive, so consider a longer stay!

Sydney and Melbourne are a great combination for first-time visitors to Australia, with Brisbane, Adelaide and/or the Outback added in, depending on how much time you have. Returnees should take in Perth, Darwin and the Kakadu National Park area and/or Tasmania if they can, plus spend some time in the cities they loved the first time around
