Take a Trip to Sydney Opera House on your Australia Vacation
Instantly recognizable for its gleaming white shells, the Sydney Opera House is a great architectural feat of the 20th century and a premier performing arts destination. In 1956, an international competition was held to find the best design for an opera house. Danish architect Jørn Utzmon emerged as the winner, and his design of interlocking shells that create the effects of sails billowing in the wind became the iconic architectural feature we see today. The Opera House took 14 years to build.
A backstage tour of the Opera House is a popular way for travellers to experience the iconic building. The tour will take you to rehearsal spaces, the orchestra pit, and the performers' Green Room. You can combine your tour with a dining experience at the Opera Bar and Opera Kitchen. Visit the Chinese Garden of Friendship, modelled after the private gardens of the Ming Dynasty, and immerse yourself in scenes at the harbour-side promenade. During the Vivid Sydney Festival of Lights over three weeks in May and June, the Opera House comes alive in mesmerizing colours. The Sydney Opera House is open all days of the week.
