A Traveller's Guide to Central America

Central America, a slender bridge uniting North and South America, occupies a sweet spot in the Western Hemisphere. Nestled at the southern end of North America, it's kissed by the Pacific Ocean on the west and cradled by the Caribbean Sea on the east.

Think sandy beaches, majestic volcanic peaks, lush rainforests, and crystal-clear blue waters—a picturesque tapestry that defines Central America and the enchanting Caribbean islands. Nature has truly showcased its artistic prowess in shaping the physical beauty of this region. Let’s see how.

Reasons to visit

Culture

Central America bears the cultural imprints of its main colonizers—the Spanish. The historical narrative is tinged with indigenous peoples wiped out by diseases or enslaved by Spanish conquerors, their traditions compelled to dance with the rhythm of Spanish culture.

Yet, in today's Central American culture, indigenous and Spanish heritage threads intertwine. What stands out most is the warmth and openness of the people. Central Americans are known for their eagerness to lend a helping hand to strangers.

While the tradition of afternoon siestas might be fading, the unhurried pace of life persists. Meetings, especially informal ones, start a half-hour later than planned. But, note, when it comes to tourism, punctuality is the unspoken rule—tour buses, for example, are expected to depart right on time.

Cuisine

When it comes to food in Central America, the mantra is simple: rice, beans, and tortillas. But don't let the simplicity fool you. Add a touch of patacones in one country and pupusas in another, and suddenly, each nation unveils its distinct flavour.

Central American cuisine is a delightful fusion of Spanish and indigenous diets. It thrives on simplicity in ingredients but dances with diversity in preparation, revealing unique culinary traditions that vary from country to country.

Natural Wonders

Central America isn't just a destination; it's a collection of awe-inspiring natural wonders waiting to captivate you. Whether lounging on idyllic Caribbean beaches or standing in awe of majestic volcanoes, the region promises a diverse and thrilling experience.

Central America boasts unparalleled biodiversity, safeguarded by numerous national parks and reserves. This is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with the chance to spot hundreds of species, including the iconic resplendent quetzal, Guatemala's national bird. The equally vibrant marine life offers excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving adventures.

Adventure sports

Central America is calling your name this year if you're craving an adrenaline rush. You can get started with a world-class underwater spectacle at the Great Blue Hole in Belize, renowned for its breathtaking drop-off and mesmerizing stalactite formations.

For those seeking a more leisurely adventure, Central America has something for everyone. Glide through mangroves on a kayaking expedition, embark on gentle hikes to discover hidden waterfalls, or indulge in birdwatching tours, all allowing you to connect with the region's natural wonders relaxed.

Honduras emerges as an affordable haven for scuba diving enthusiasts, boasting clear-water beaches perfect for snorkelling. For a more off-the-beaten-path diving experience, explore the underwater wonders of Isla Coiba in Panama, often hailed as the "Galapagos of Central America."

Not crowded

In the era of off-the-beaten-path travel, where the usual tourist hotspots are bustling with visitors, the quest for tranquil alternatives has become a trend amidst the surge in arrivals to popular destinations like Cancun and Cabo. The spotlight shifts to hidden gems for a more secluded escape.

Surprisingly, Belize emerges as a top contender for an uncrowded tropical retreat. With many Americans still waiting to discover its existence, Belize offers an exclusive vacation experience with exceptionally low chances of encountering fellow nationals on a quiet sandy stretch. Embark on a journey to Belize, where serenity meets the unexplored.

Home to over 100 volcanoes, some potentially active, it boasts a dynamic landscape shaped by frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. Unique among its counterparts, El Salvador lacks a Caribbean Sea coastline.

Guatemala

Guatemala has a vibrant culture and natural wonders and stands as Central America's most populated jewel. Dubbed the "Land of the Eternal Spring," its tropical climate and intertwined traditions offer a paradise for culture enthusiasts. Rich in history, Guatemala is a tapestry of natural beauty and unique heritage.

Honduras

Mexico

Adorned with natural resources and a diverse economy, Mexico invites exploration of its rich culture, ancient ruins, breathtaking beaches, and culinary delights. A cultural mosaic, Mexico's attractions range from productive oil fields to the allure of its diverse crops.

Unique, Interesting or Unusual Places to visit

Beyond its aquatic wonders, Caye Caulker embodies the spirit of relaxation with its "Go Slow" mantra. This tiny island in northern Belize invites you to embrace pristine snorkelling sites and unwind amidst its laid-back island vibes.

Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo, a coastal haven on Costa Rica's Caribbean shores, paints a vivid picture of tropical allure. Immerse yourself in lush jungles, discover pristine beaches, and witness the magic of a wildlife rescue center. As the sun sets, Puerto Viejo transforms, offering vibrant nightlife to complement its natural wonders. This small town beckons as one of Central America's must-visit destinations, where every corner echoes with the harmony of nature and culture.

Important things to know

Under the Central America Border Control Agreement (CA-4), border-hopping within El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua is a breeze. Enjoy a visa-free stay of up to 90 days, counting from entering any of these countries.

In most Central American countries (excluding Costa Rica), the mighty US dollar is the widely accepted currency. Notably, El Salvador exclusively operates with the US dollar. So, bargaining in bustling markets or savouring local flavours, having a few greenbacks in your pocket is the key to a smooth transaction.

Is it safe to travel

Overall, Central America is a safe haven for travellers. Violent incidents against tourists, mainly concerning petty theft, are rare. To ensure your journey stays on the smooth side, here are some common-sense tips:

Isolation isn't your travel buddy. Avoid remote areas, especially at night or in bustling cities, as they may pose a higher risk of incidents. Stick to crowded places, where anonymity in the masses is your shield.

Dress inconspicuously to blend in seamlessly. Leave flashy jewelry and watches behind, and keep that phone tucked away. Being low-key reduces the chances of catching the eye of pickpockets.

Belize combines the Caribbean’s laid-back vibe with Central America’s cultural richness. You can snorkel the second-largest barrier reef in the world in the morning and explore ancient Mayan temples in the afternoon. Few destinations offer that contrast so seamlessly.

Globetrotters should look to visit Hopkins Village — a coastal community with strong Garifuna roots. It’s less touristy than Ambergris Caye but offers beautiful beaches, authentic culture, and easy access to both reef and rainforest.

Many assume Belize is only about the beach and reef. In reality, its inland adventures are just as extraordinary — lush jungles, hidden caves with Mayan artifacts, and wildlife encounters rival Costa Rica.

My daughter and I had a wonderful 2 weeks in New Zealand! The country is so beautiful and the people so friendly. Our destination specialist did a great job with planning and organizing the itinerary, choosing our hotels, and organizing transportation. The hotels were absolutely beautiful and we had great views. We felt right at home and found all of the staff to be friendly and accommodating. There were no issues with our itinerary and our excursions we were always on the list. Our transportation was always ready and waiting for us. We want to thank Goway Travel for their hard work and patience with us in planning this trip. Any changes that needed to be made were communicated timely. We also want to thank you for the beautiful weather during the entire 2 weeks it was perfect every day 😀. It was a memorable trip that we will never forget and we will think of Goway when we plan our next adventure. Because it was not just a vacation; it was an adventure!Connie Wenhardt

My clients had a wonderful time on their trip to Easter Island. They were very pleased with the Hare Nua Hotel Boutique and especially noted the warmth and hospitality of the hotel staff as well as their excellent breakfasts. Jaime Vargas-Hendandez was an exceptionally gracious and knowledgeable agent, who went out of his way to ensure that my clients had the best possible experience. We were just back from an ambitious 42-day grand circle through seven of the ASEAN countries! An itinerary gestating over a period of time, carefully planned and pore over intently all the way through proved satisfying as expected, but the amazing "embarras de richesse" in six weeks such as we've never experienced before truly went beyond our imagination, both in terms of scenery and culture! The vast majority of the local teams who work with Goway provided impressive service throughout our stay, and quite a number of the guides and drivers deserve to be called cream of the crop in their line of work. But ultimately, we owe our destination specialist Taryn a profound gratitude for her insight and for her coordination efforts which made all this possible. When our debit card was not retrievable in an airport ATM Taryn again went out of her way to approve a small loan through transfer to our local guide's bank account, who then withdrew cash from an ATM while we simply paid Goway Travel by credit card through an online payment link. This helped us tremendously through that difficult moment. We will always treasure this kindness on her part.Yuan Lin
