Our Guide to Museum Hopping in Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a city in love with museums. Berlin loves its museums so much that it’s collected five of them on a small island on the Spree River, known as Museuminsel. There are museums devoted to Jewish history elsewhere in the city, memorializing the sobering events of World War II, divided Berlin, German film and television, LGBT culture, technology, and much more.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, so here are some of the best museums to get you started.

The Neues Museum

The museums of Museuminsel have been collecting antiquities since the Altes Museum (Old Museum) opened in 1830. The Altes still contains a good collection of Roman and Greek art. But it’s the Neues Museum (logically enough, New Museum) luring more visitors, and with good reason. The Neues is all about ancient Egypt, prehistory, and early history. The Egyptian collection is the main attraction, easily rivalling New York’s Met or the British Museum, with an astonishing array of household, work, and religious items, plus a collection of sarcophagi. But its most famous resident is the bust of Queen Nefertiti, who ceaselessly stares back at visitors who’ve come to admire her exquisite detail and beauty. The Neues Museum itself has had a rough history, only reopening in 2009 after the WWII bombing left it in ruins for almost 70 years. Few history buffs would say it wasn’t worth the wait.

German Historical Museum

Leave Museuminsel behind and make your way toward the famous Brandenburg Gate. Immediately after crossing the Spree, you’ll come to the German Historical Museum, an in-depth journey through centuries of German history, from Charlemagne to the 21st-century. And we do mean in-depth. Give this place two to three hours to hear the entire, undeniably fascinating story. Otherwise, everything is easy to navigate in chronological order, so if you’d like to skip to the elements that interest you most, feel free. Our advice? If you’re in Berlin for several days, don’t linger on the sections covering the Third Reich or Cold War Berlin.

Topography of Terror

Berlin's Topography of Terror museum, which explores Nazi Germany.
The Topography of Terror explores the dark history of Hitler and the Nazi party.

Germany openly confronts the National Socialist era with a devoted commitment to ensuring it's not forgotten and to prevent any recurrence of such a dark chapter in history. Several museums around Berlin explore this history, including the evocative Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The Topography of Terror, however, paints a bigger picture of Hitler’s insidious rise to power and is probably the most informative and chilling museum on the subject you can visit. An outdoor display (set, by no coincidence, beneath a surviving fragment of the Berlin Wall) lays out the timeline of the Nazis’ rise from an extremist joke to wielding absolute power in Germany. The museum also happens to be built on the site of the former Gestapo and SS headquarters. It’s not a comfortable place to visit, but the museum comes as close as any museum can to explaining how an evil of this magnitude seduced such a forward-thinking nation like Germany.

Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer & Museum in the Kulturbrauerei

The popular DDR Museum (located just across the Spree from Museuminsel) paints a decidedly quaint, kid-friendly view of life under Communist rule. Checkpoint Charlie has become one of the city’s popular symbols and is a pretty transparent tourist trap. If you want to explore the real thing (for free), head north to Bernauer Strasse, a street that witnessed the city’s divide at its most brutal. It’s also the site of numerous daring escapes, successful or otherwise. Start with the museum on the corner of Ackerstrasse (across the street from a recreation of the infamous death strip), then follow the park east for the full story, including a moving memorial to the eastern refugees who didn’t make it. Then, follow Eberswalder Strasse, crossing under the U-Bahn and turning into Knaackstrasse, where you’ll find the Kulturbrauerei. Here, you’ll find a free museum offering a balanced take on life in the GDR, with household items, testimonials, and experts on the era—free of the tourist crush that typically crowds the DDR Museum. If your visit falls on a Sunday, break up the day with lunch and market browsing in Mauerpark.

Fee: No

The Jewish Museum Berlin

Within its deconstructivism, zig-zag walls, the Jewish Museum Berlin charts the course of Jewish life and history in Germany through the centuries, including the reformation and the horrors of the Third Reich. The architecture of this museum is as interesting as its exhibits. Libeskind was determined that his design be as evocative as the collection it housed. This is particularly noticeable in the building’s lower levels, which detail the tragedies of Jewish exile and the Holocaust. But each section of the Museum, best explored linearly, is designed and integrated with painstaking attention to mood, detail, and tone.

The Pergamon Museum

The Pergamon Museum as seen from the water in Berlin.
The Pergamon Museum is currently closed for renovations.

The Pergamon Museum, one of Museum Island’s most famous institutions, is currently closed for a major renovation project that began in October 2023. The museum is expected to partially reopen in spring 2027, when visitors will once again be able to see highlights such as the Pergamon Altar, ancient Babylon’s Ishtar Gate (a reconstruction using the original bricks), the Market Gate of Miletus, a vast collection of Islamic art, the Mshatta Façade, and a fragment from the Epic of Gilgamesh. Germany’s possession of the Pergamon itself might seem odd, but the acquisition saved the Altar from imminent destruction, not to mention looters in its native Turkiye. A similar story lurks behind each stunning façade as you weave through ancient splendour in the heart of one of Europe’s most modern cities. If possible, book a timed entry ticket through the website. Queues can be long, even with the renovation in full swing.

Fee: Yes (pre-booking recommended)

Is the Museum Pass Berlin worth it?

The 3-day Museum Pass gives you access to a whopping 50 museums throughout Berlin, including the big players in Museuminsel and the Jewish Museum. It also covers specialty museums such as the Bauhaus Archive, the German Museum of Technology, and the Brücke Museum, a small but wonderful modern art space near the Grunewald. Its value really depends on how long you plan to stay in Berlin, how much time you have at leisure, and how much time you want to devote to museums. Berlin is a city with lots of other things to do. It typically costs around €32–€35, making it worthwhile if you plan to visit several museums in a short stay.

The trick is not to overdo Berlin or stuff your itinerary before you arrive, as with many other destinations. The city spoils for choice in attractions, and many of its best ones are free. Let it slowly work its charms on you and discover why a once-divided city is now unifying travellers who love it.

Germany has a highly efficient and well-integrated public transportation system that is good for both local and long-distance travel options. This includes buses, trams, subways (U-Bahn), suburban trains (S-Bahn), and high-speed trains (ICE, IC), among others. Public transport is generally reliable, comfortable, and relatively affordable, making it a popular choice for both residents and tourists.

As a travel agent, it was very easy to work with Goway. They were very responsive, especially Osvaldo Gonzalez, even when the client wanted to make in-destination changes a day or two prior. My clients absolutely enjoyed everything about their trip to Costa Rica - they specifically mentioned that all the drivers and guides they had were excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable. I would not hesitate to use Goway again for a custom trip to Costa Rica. Shawna Woods Roy

We, three couples, all enjoyed our time in Peru, despite the small amount of time we had, and the fact one person had injury while on the cruise prior to arriving in Lima. We did want to experience Machu Picchu without spending as many days as others usually do, since we had been traveling prior to that already. Kajal at Goway was able to tailor a well packed three-day private tour for our small group of six. Every detail, from the moment we got off the cruise ship, to Cusco, to Machu Picchu, and back to Lima airport hotel, was well taken care of. Kajal was very efficient in helping with the requested itinerary, and in staying on desired budget, as well answered all questions in timely fashion. We were able to accomplish what we were not sure if possible, all thanks to Kajal at Goway. Our experience in Peru was very positive. We felt the tours organized by Goway had enabled us to have great and impressive exposure to Peruvian culture and important historical sights - all 31 hours in 3 days!!! Condor Travel in Peru took care of us every step of the way. Every person we came across was very courteous, willing, and helpful. Help was always there and questions answered quickly via Whatsapp. All in all a great and positive experience we would highly recommend.KM

Mary G. was an absolute pleasure to work with. I partner with Goway often for Europe and typically have my go to rep, so stepping outside of that for a New Zealand itinerary had me a little unsure at first. That hesitation quickly disappeared. Mary stepped in with confidence, handled all of my moving pieces with ease, and truly understood the level of detail I needed to take care of my clients. She delivered a beautifully curated itinerary that exceeded expectations, and most importantly, my clients had an incredible experience in New Zealand. I’m so grateful to have her as a resource and look forward to working together again.Nichole Pierce

Joanna was amazing!!! She was able to set up a ten day trip for me in Sydney in a matter of a couple of weeks. All accommodation and tours were amazing and the 24 hour help center was great and where able to call up the tour company and have them come and still pick be up when I had a mixup with the reservation. Would definitely recommend Goway to any friends and family and will definitely be using them again.Erica Wolff

I cannot sing Erin’s praises enough! She planned an action-packed two-week New Zealand itinerary that hit every single stop on our bucket list. Every experience was truly first-class and luxurious. While I found myself being price-conscious initially, once I saw the incredible quality of the experiences she curated, I knew it was going to be the trip of a lifetime. A huge thank you to Erin and Go Way Travel for making my 50th birthday so epic. We’ll definitely be reaching out for our next big adventure!Michelle

I booked this trip to Adelaide with Goway, after using them before when we explored the 'big' sites of Australia. This time, we went to Adelaide to go to three of the top wine growing areas for wine tastings. We were a small group of 4 people. It was made better as the vendor used Small Batch Wine Tours for all of our excursions. They were fantastic making us the only travelers on these tours. Matthew, the owner, even adjusted our wineries on the last day to go to different place. This place totally marked off everything we were looking for in wine. Ended up buying a couple of bottles. Between Goway setting it up and Small Batch Wine Tours running the actual tours we had a beautiful and seamless trip. not applicable
