Overview

Take a trip to Oslo on your Norway Vacation

The capital of Norway, Oslo is located on the Oslo Fjord in the south of the country. It is laid out in the shape of a horseshoe around the sea and is surrounded by green hills, forests and mountains, all to be enjoyed on a Norway vacation. The city is known for awarding the Nobel Peace Prizes.

Oslo has many attractions and offers several pleasant parks, a scenic harbour and diverse architecture.

One of the best-known attractions is probably the outdoor sculptures located in Frogner Park and known as the open-air Vigeland Museum with 212 large sculptures made of bronze, granite and cast iron.

Some other important landmarks are the Royal Palace designed in the Neo-Classic style and home to the Royal Family, the Akershus Fortress, an imposing medieval castle built originally in 1299 and the contemporary, futuristic-looking Oslo Opera House located on the waterfront.

When on a Norway vacation, check out the abundance of extremely interesting museums in Oslo. The best known is possibly the Viking Ship Museum with its many Viking-era discoveries. The Kon-Tiki Museum has displays of the original vessels from the expeditions of Thor Heyerdahl. The Ibsen Museum showcases the playwright’s life and works in his former home. Norway’s Resistance Museum reflects on the country’s World War I involvement. There is also a museum dedicated to the history of the Nobel Peace Prize.

For cultur buffs on trips to Norway, there are the National Gallery which houses the largest collection of paintings and sculptures in Norway, the Oslo City Museum which also has a large collection of art, the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art and the Edvard Munch Museum dedicated to Norway’s best-known painter.

Other specialized museums include the Norway Folk Museum, an open-air museum featuring 155 traditional Norwegian houses, the Norsk Folksmuseum in nearby Bygdoy featuring folk art, and Viking exhibits and the Norwegian Museum of Magic displaying works and the history of Norway’s magicians.

If you can, plan your vacation around so you can participate in Constitution Day on May 17th. It’s Norway’s national day, but unlike most countries, it’s not military or political. It’s a huge, joyful celebration of children, culture, and national pride.
