Local Meets Luxury on Fiji's Vanua Levu

Tell me more

When you look at a map of Fiji, it can be hard to believe the country is spread over 330 beautiful islands. That’s partly because two of the islands dwarf their neighbours. Viti Levu is home both to Fiji’s capital, Suva, and the country’s main international air and cruise hub, Nadi (pronounced Nan-dee). To its northeast, Vanua Levu is home to almost 136,000 Fijians, but sees relatively few tourists compared to its southern neighbour, or small, popular honeymoon islands such as the Mamanucas or Yasawas.

That makes Vanua Levu an ideal destination for those looking to discover a Fiji away from a curated tourist image. Where the laid back ‘Fiji time’ lifestyle lends itself to the everyday and invites you to take your time discovering what makes Fiji’s second island unique. Fijians are famously friendly, all the more so on less hectic Vanua Levu.

Where to Stay on Vanua Levu

Don’t mistake a lack of tourist crowds for a lack of tourist infrastructure. Vanua Levu is well equipped with luxurious resorts to suit a variety of budgets, and like Viti Levu, its largest city, Labasa, isn’t its major hospitality and transport hub. The centre of Vanua Levu’s tourism industry is the relatively small settlement of Savusavu. The town is situated on Savusavu Bay, one of the most beautiful in Fiji, which is perfectly located for reef diving and snorkeling, visits to the island’s hinterland and local villages, and more. The town’s shoreline on the bay even home to its own series of hot springs, where locals sometimes come to cook meals. In addition, the resorts here tend to be smaller, boutique properties, creating a far more relaxed, secluded feel than the larger players on Viti Levu. If you’re looking to stay near the ‘real’ Fiji without compromising that luxurious resort experience, Vanua Levu is an ideal destination.

Top Things to Do on Vanua Levu

No matter how luxurious or welcoming your resort is, if you’re coming all the way to Fiji, you’ll want to get out and experience some of what the real Fiji has to offer! Here are some sights and experiences unique to Vanua Levu.

Snorkelling at koro sun Savusavu

Dive or Snorkel Fiji’s Rainbow Reef

Arguably Fiji’s most renowned snorkeling and diving spot, the Rainbow Reef lies just off to Vanua Levu’s southeast, and features a dazzling variety of corals and over 2,000 species of tropical fish. Amid such a colourful display, you might not expect one of the top attractions to be ‘The Great White Wall,’ but the soft white corals on this popular dive site shelter most of the many species that live on the reef, in addition to being a striking formation in their own right.

Get the Inside Story on Fiji’s Pearls

The reputation of Fiji’s pearls has grown on the basis of their rarity, natural beauty, and simplicity. J. Hunter Pearls invites visitors to their pearl farm in Savusavu Bay with a chance to tour the facility and learn why Fiji’s pearls are so coveted around the world.

Take in the View from Flora Tropica Gardens

Arguably the best way to see Savusavu Bay, taking in the view from Flora Tropica Gardens. Be sure to take some time to wander the wide range of exotic plant life as well, including over 300 palm species. Nakawaga Waterfall is another local landmark that showcases the natural beauty of Vanua Levu.

Bargain at the Local Market

Even on a luxury trip, a destination like Fiji comes alive when you rub shoulders with the locals at the local food markets. Even if you’re just here to graze on the delicious range of island fruits and snap a few photos in between exploring Savusavu, a stop at the market is a valuable insight into local Fiji, even more so if you can visit one of the towns further inland. Most resorts will organize day trips that bring you closer to the local Fijians, so don’t hesitate to ask.

Why Vanua Levu is Where to Go on a Fiji Honeymoon

Traditional vacation spots like Denarau Island or the Mamanucas tend to take the spotlight when we talk about honeymoon destinations in Fiji. But Vanua Levu offers a more reclusive, local alternative, without compromising luxury. Just be ready for the adventure of mostly dirt tracks in between stops, as the island is not so developed as Viti Levu. The quick flight from Nadi to Savusavu makes it easy to reach as well. If you are celebrating your honeymoon, be sure to let your booking agent know, as many resorts frequently offer special gifts to honeymooners.

For first-time visitors, I suggest splitting their stay to experience a few nights at a resort along the Coral Coast, where they could experience a visit to a local village, then end their trip at one of the islands in the Mamanucas to experience some different beaches and activities. For returning visitors, I recommend exploring a different group of islands, such as heading to one of the Northern Islands, which is a short flight from Nadi.

I booked this trip to Adelaide with Goway, after using them before when we explored the 'big' sites of Australia. This time, we went to Adelaide to go to three of the top wine growing areas for wine tastings. We were a small group of 4 people. It was made better as the vendor used Small Batch Wine Tours for all of our excursions. They were fantastic making us the only travelers on these tours. Matthew, the owner, even adjusted our wineries on the last day to go to different place. This place totally marked off everything we were looking for in wine. Ended up buying a couple of bottles. Between Goway setting it up and Small Batch Wine Tours running the actual tours we had a beautiful and seamless trip. not applicable

Land Package booked was for Bora Bora. The Goway Agent priced out 3 different resorts in the same area. Before making a final decision, she even obtained the menus at the Resort so the clients could decide if they wanted to purchase the 1/2 board meal package. With extreme patience, the agent obtained answers to all of our questions. It was so nice to have this package inclusive of all taxes and resort fees and to have a local agent meet the clients upon their arrival in PPT. EMD

I had an absolutely wonderful experience working with Shalini. From the very first conversation, she was warm, welcoming, and genuinely invested in helping me plan the perfect trip. she took the time to understand what I was looking for, offered thoughtful suggestions, and shared incredibly helpful insights that only someone with deep knowledge and passion for travel could provide. What really stood out was how easy she made everything feel. Every question I had—big or small—was answered with patience and clarity. her recommendations were spot‑on, and I never felt rushed or pressured. Instead, I felt supported, informed, and excited about my plans. If you’re looking for someone who is friendly, attentive, and truly committed to creating a great travel experience, I can’t recommend Shalini highly enough. I would like to recognize the outstanding support provided by the Goway Travel team, and especially Yael, during a very challenging situation involving my customers who were stranded in Dubai. From the moment the issue arose, Yael and the team were incredibly supportive, working through multiple options to secure flights and ensure my customers could return home safely. Their persistence, professionalism, and willingness to explore every possible solution made a stressful situation much easier to manage. Throughout the process, communication was clear, timely, and reassuring. It was evident that the team was fully committed to the well-being of the traveler and to resolving the situation as quickly as possible. I truly appreciate the dedication shown by Yael and the Goway Travel team. Their actions reflect a strong commitment to customer care and partnership, and I’m very grateful for the support they provided in getting my customer home safely. Thank you Goway. Our trip to Asia was fantastic! From the beginning of registration, working with Ameet Duggal, to the actual trip, the service Goway provided was outstanding! Ameet was great to work with. He was kind, professional and answered all my questions whenever they arose. Our guides in all four locations (Hong Kong, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Siem Reap) were all exceptional. All were very well informed, spoke English very well, had a great sense of humor, were always on time, and paid attention to all the details so as to make our trip absolutely problem free and enjoyable. We were picked up at all locations at the airport, and returned there, in a punctual manner. The drivers were great, especially Bros in Siem Reap. All had lots of water for us because is was pretty hot everywhere we went. Food was wonderful and all the sites we visited were interesting and beautiful. I was especially impressed with how our guides knew how and when to navigate certain sites to avoid large crowds. They situated our visits so we would avoid the intense heat. All in all, I would definitely consider doing another independent tour with Goway. I would also recommend your services to anyone who wished to travel abroad, especially to Asia! Jamie Ferbezar

I had the pleasure of working with Erin. It was my first time booking something in Europe and let me tell you Erin made everything easy and very simple for us to follow. She booked everything for us from our plane tickets private transfers and all of our tours that we did in Ireland. She nailed it. I would definitely recommend booking with GoAway travel and if you have Erin as your travel agent she make sure everything is covered. 10 out of 10. Ness Hedge

The organization for this trip was outstanding, everything went really smoothly. Really nice hotels and great tours and guides. GoWay chose beautiful places for me to see and things to do, jet boat rides, a cruise on Milford Sound, numerous beautiful hikes. I don't think I could have planned all this alone. Great job!
