Mount Rushmore National Memorial stands in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It features the colossal sculptures of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln carved into the granite face of the mountain. These majestic figures narrate the story of America's birth, growth, and preservation and showcase the country's rich heritage from its earliest inhabitants to its modern diversity.
To fully appreciate the memorial, venture beyond the crowds to the Grand View Terrace and marvel at the breathtaking head-on views. However, for a more intimate experience, take the often-overlooked loop around the mountain's base. Ascend the steps through Ponderosa Pines for closer views of the faces, and keep an eye out for Rocky Mountain goats and mule deer along the way. Mount Rushmore welcomes visitors daily from 5am to 9pm. For a quieter experience, consider visiting during the less crowded months of May, September, or October.
