I recently caught up with Amber Pfister, host of NBC's California Live, at The Proud Bird in Los Angeles, California, to discuss the recent Flavours Issue of Globetrotting Magazine. The Proud Bird is one of America's most unique food bazaars, just five minutes from Los Angeles International Airport, where locals and travellers alike have been gathering for nearly 60 years to enjoy a wide variety of culinary concepts and aviation history. While patrons of The Proud Bird typically look to the sky between bites, Amber and I had our eyes set on the road.
As Editor in Chief of Globetrotting Magazine and someone who has spent most of my life exploring destinations through their cuisine, I've come to believe that the road is the world's best dining room. My earliest travels were with my family in our station wagon where we would wind through the Rocky Mountains on the way to visit my grandparents on the West Coast. That's why road trips have a special place in my heart.
Goway's 8-day Snapshots of California Road Trip, which Amber and I discussed, is a perfect example. Starting in San Francisco, you cross the Golden Gate Bridge into Napa and Sonoma wine country for guided tastings and a behind-the-scenes tour of two highly regarded wineries, a perfect first day on the road. From there, the route winds through the Sierra Nevada to Yosemite National Park, where the towering granite cliffs of El Capitan and Half Dome are the backdrop for your lodge lunch surrounded by old-growth forest. Descending through California's agricultural Central Valley, you reach the coast at Monterey, whose Cannery Row seafood strip is the perfect stop for locally caught rockfish or Dungeness crab. The following morning brings a whale watching cruise in Monterey Bay before the 2.5-hour coastal drive south to Pismo Beach, where fresh Pismo clams are a local staple. The final day traces the Pacific Coast through Santa Barbara, stopping for a late lunch on State Street, framed by red-tiled roofs and the Santa Ynez Mountains, passing the celebrity beaches of Malibu and into Los Angeles.
That's the special thing about California and road trips generally. California's cuisine is a living record of the cultures that built it: Mexican, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Italian, etc., each layered across the state. Road trips reward the curious globetrotter who takes the time to enjoy them.
The best road trips don't just move you through geography; they move you through cultures. The road has a way of connecting you with a destination on a much more profound and personal level.
Road Trips with Goway
Goway's story began with road trips and overland tours of North and South America in 1970, and we've been building unforgettable road trips ever since. Goway now offers over 80 self-drive itineraries across 23 countries. Every trip comes with a rental vehicle, pre-booked accommodation, and curated touring built in. Still, as always, the real value is in the customization.
Goway's family of Destination Specialists can tailor any itinerary to your pace, palate, and curiosity, as they have lived, worked, or travelled extensively in the regions they sell. Once you're on the road, our 24/7 in-destination support means the only decision you need to make each morning is where to stop for breakfast.
The range speaks for itself. Ireland's 11-day Wild Atlantic Way Road Trip changes flavour every hundred kilometres, winding from Sligo's surf beaches through the sea cliffs of Donegal, past working farms in Mayo, into Kerry's ancient monastic coastline and Cork's legendary English Market. In Africa, the 13-day Namibia Family Road Trip takes you from Windhoek through Etosha's wildlife waterholes, into Damaraland's desert wilderness, and south to the towering dunes of Sossusvlei. It's one of the most elemental drives on Earth, made accessible by Goway's in-country partners and on-the-ground support.
Meanwhile, Goway's 8-day O'ahu & Maui Family Road Trip takes you beyond Hawai'i's resorts with sunrise coastline tours, snorkelling at Molokini Crater, and plenty of local food stops you won't find in a brochure. The 14-day Pacific Coast Road Trip: Sydney to Cairns traces Australia's entire east coast, from Sydney's harbour through Hunter Valley wine country and Byron Bay all the way into tropical Queensland.
Then there is Goway's newest frontier: the 15-day Japan Road Trip: Kyushu Edition, the company's first self-drive itinerary in Asia, threading through volcanic landscapes, ancient cedar forests, and Fukuoka's legendary ramen stalls.
Goway's Destination Specialists know more than the routes of your dream road trip. They know what's worth stopping for along them. It's the depth of knowledge built over five decades that will help turn a road trip into a globetrotting adventure you'll never forget.
