Social Conventions
The people of Mauritius are very friendly, hospitable and generous. They adhere to a generally relaxed attitude towards life and people are more important than keeping time and schedules. Handshaking is a customary greeting, while it is not uncommon to hear the French ‘Bonjour’. Amongst Hindu Indians on the island, ‘Namaste’ is the usual greeting where a person places palms together (hands upwards) in front of their chest or chin, sometimes bowing slightly.
Dress is quite informal, although, for men, a suit is required for particularly formal occasions. If invited to a private house for a meal, a small gift is appreciated. It is also considered polite to accept and try everything that is offered.
Language
English is the official language of Mauritius, however, many people are fluent in both English and French. Creole is spoken and understood by the entire population. Hindi, Bhojpuri, Urdu and Chinese are also spoken.
Religion
The majority of the population in Mauritius is Hindu (48%). Approximately 32% of the population is Christian with Roman Catholicism being the predominant denomination. A further 17% are Muslim, with Chinese Buddhism and Confucianism making up a 2% minority. Around 1% of the population follows other minority religions.
