Uruguay is not a large country. In fact, it is the third smallest in South America. It is easily reached from Buenos Aires in Argentina by high-speed boat over the River Plate Estuary. Geographically, it is made up of fertile rolling plains and low hill ranges. It has a mild climate all year round with very little variation. The strong European influences are to be seen in its culture.

The capital Montevideo accounts for more than half the population of Uruguay. It is the southernmost capital in South America and the only large city. The most interesting area is the old town “Cuidad Vieja” where one can roam the old streets and also enjoy the many restaurants and small shops there. Another area which is in total contrast is the attractive coastline just south of the centre of Montevideo with its long promenade which is shared by cyclists, walkers, runners and families spending time at the beach. It is also known for its beautiful sunsets

Two landmarks in Montevideo are the Palacio Salvo, a high-rise building offering good views of the city from the top and the Teatro Solis, an attractive neo-classic style theatre built in 1856.

Colonia Del Sacramento is a charming old colonial town situated on the River Plate and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally founded in 1680 by the Portuguese, it is fairly compact and a stroll around the old part can be very enjoyable. There are some excellent restaurants in the old quarter. Try climbing the lighthouse steps for a view of not only the rooftops but the River Plate too.

Punta Del Este is a major resort south of Montevideo and is known as the “Monaco of South America”. It is a very attractive town with excellent beaches and resort facilities such as sailing and surfing. There are casinos and excellent restaurants to engage the visitor. Punta Del Este attracts visitors from all over South America because of its reputation as a first-class resort.
