The Desert Rose

Duration
14 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,959

From Pyramids to Petra, this exceptional 14 day itinerary gives you a unique opportunity to discover the immense heritage and rich history of two interesting countries, Egypt and Jordan.

This 14 day journey pairs two of the ancient world’s most incredible wonders to create an unforgettable journey. Explore the splendid land of the Pharaohs before crossing the Sinai Peninsula to Petra, the ‘rose-red city half as old as time’.

Start in Cairo, where a full day tour takes you to The Great Pyramid of Khufu. Built between 2560 and 2540 BC, it is also the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one still standing. The surrounding necropolis offers much to discover, including the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, The Great Sphinx, along with numerous cemeteries and many smaller tombs. Your tour also takes you to the Solar Boat Museum, the ancient capital of Memphis and Sakkara, the famed ‘City of the Dead’.

Fly to Luxor for an unforgettable five day cruise up the Nile. Explore the wonders of Upper Egypt, including the Valley of the Kings, where Pharaohs of the New Kingdom were entombed between the 16th and 11th centuries BC. Visit the ruins of ancient Thebes and the incredible temples of Luxor and Karnak.

The Temple of Horus is the most complete ancient site in nearby Edfu, and perhaps the best preserved anywhere in Egypt. Equally impressive is the temple dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek at Kom Ombo. You’ll see Sobek enshrined in much of the temple’s artwork, and in the 300 mummified crocodiles displayed in the temple’s Crocodile Museum.

A day tour of Aswan takes you to see Aswan Dam, with a cruise around beautiful Elephantine Island and the Botanical Gardens. You’ll also have the option to fly to Abu Simbel to see the temple of Ramses II.

A mysterious desert nether-land between Africa and the Middle East, the Sinai Peninsula is packed with fascinating history, and is lined by many of the region’s best beach resorts. Stop in at Sharm el-Sheikh, with the option of visiting St Catherine’s Monastery.

Jordan’s capital, Amman is a thriving, progressive city, particularly in its west. With historic sights like the Roman Theatre and King Abdullah Mosque, this is an ideal place to begin your Jordanian adventure.

After a day touring the capital, set out for Petra, the symbol of Jordan. Spend two nights here, as you’ll want plenty of time to visit this millennia old city, with famous sights including the rock-cut architecture of the Treasury, the Street of Facades and the Amphitheater.

Head out to visit Wadi Rum, the breathtaking, almost alien desert landscape made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. Finally, visit the Roman city of Jerash and Ajloun Castle before your return to Amman.

Day 1

Arrive Cairo

Upon arrival at Cairo Airport you will be met and assisted by Goway's local representative and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of your day is at leisure.

Cairo, the Triumphant City, is the glorious capital of Egypt, the cradle of civilization and the beacon of religion. It is the largest city in the Middle East and Africa and lies at the centre of all routes leading to and from the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Greater Cairo extends on the banks of the River Nile to the south of its delta. Here, the Nile divides into two tributaries, the Rosetta and the Damietta. On its East Side stands the evidence of 2000 years of Islamic, Christian Coptic and Jewish culture still flourishing to this day. On its West Side lies the Ancient Egyptian city of Memphis (Giza), the renowned capital of the Old Kingdom and the site of the Pyramids, the only surviving wonder of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Indeed, a journey through Cairo is a journey through time, a journey through the history of an immortal civilization.

Day 4

Luxor to Edfu

Enjoy an early morning sail to Edfu via Esna Lock.

The small town of Edfu is situated on the west bank of the Nile, approximately 56km south of Esna and 105km north of Aswan. Today, Edfu is an important centre for sugar production and pottery making. The site of Edfu was known as "Wetjetser-hor" (its classical name was "Apollinopolos Magna"), the place where the god Horus was worshipped and where the battle between Horus and his traditional enemy, Seth, took place according to ancient mythology. The main monument at Edfu is the Ptolemaic Temple of Horus, which can be found right on the edge of the town.

The Temple of Horus is perhaps the best-preserved in all of Egypt and ranks second behind Karnak, simply because of its immense size, approximately 230 by 400 feet, with a pylon measuring over 100-feet-high. At the temple's entrance stand two large black granite statues of Horus who is depicted as a falcon. The elaborate carvings on the walls of the temple are beautiful, as if carved just yesterday. Inside the temple was a small sanctuary, where the priests of the day offered the best parts of the animals to the gods.

Meal Plan Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 5

Edfu to Kom Ombo and Aswan

An exhilarating carriage ride will take you through town to the Temple of Horus, the falcon god. You will continue sailing to Kom Ombo to visit the Greco-Roman-styled Temple of Sobek, the crocodile god. Standing serenely on a hilltop, the site offers an incredible view over the Nile.

Kom Ombo is located on a bend in the Nile River about 50km north of Aswan. Located on the east bank, Kom Ombo is home to an unusual double temple built during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The temple is dedicated to the crocodile god, Sobek, and the falcon god, Horus. Despite being badly damaged over time, the temple is a beautiful sight as you approach from either direction on the river, particularly as sunset nears and the colours change.

Meal Plan Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 6

Enjoy Aswan

Today's morning sightseeing includes Aswan's High Dam, the ancient Granite Quarries, and the Temple of Philae. After lunch, sail around Elephantine Island and the Botanical Gardens.

Aswan is Egypt's sunniest southern city and ancient frontier town, located about 81 miles south of Luxor. Here, you will find a distinctively African atmosphere. The city's ancient Egyptian name was Syene. Aswan is small enough to walk around and graced with the most beautiful setting on the Nile, where the pace of life is slow and relaxing. Days can be spent strolling up and down the broad Corniche, watching the sailboats etch the sky with their tall masts, or sitting in floating restaurants listening to Nubian music and eating freshly caught fish.

Meal Plan Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 7

Fly Aswan to Sharm el Sheik
