Ancient Silk Road: Xian to Urumqi

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,087

FIRST-CLASS | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Journey along the ancient Silk Road on this trip to Western China. Starting in Xian, you’ll travel west to far-flung parts of China, cross the Gobi Desert, see ancient treasures, and get to experience the traditions and daily lives of the Uyghur people and other Chinese minority groups.

This 9-day Chinese vacation takes you along the ancient Silk Road from Xian to Urumqui. It includes first-class accommodations, private tours, and is perfect for return visitors to China who want to explore far-flung destinations and experience minority cultures.

Your trip to China begins in Xian, the former imperial capital and the home of the Terracotta Warriors. It was also a key city on the Silk Road that connected Europe and Asia. Your first day in Xian is at leisure to see the city highlights like the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, where you’ll find the Terracotta Warriors, and the massive Xian City Wall that’s towered over the city for nearly a thousand years. From Xian, fly to Dunhuang, perched on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Get introduced to Asia’s largest desert with a camel ride over the sand dunes at Crescent Moon Spring. Afterwards, enjoy a rooftop dinner with stunning views over the desert. The next day, head to the Mogao Caves, a fascinating series of caves and grottoes carved into steep cliffs that are home to thousands of religious relics. Gaze upon murals of Buddhist legend and statues of the Buddha before learning more about this era at the Dunhuang Museum.

Continue to Turpan, which is one of the lowest cities in the world and an oasis in the midst of the Gobi Desert. Explore the ancient walled capital of Jiaohe and survey the massive fortress that used to protect against raiders to the north and west. The next day, explore the ruins of Gaochang, a garrison town that was the capital of the Western Han Empire. Continue to the Underground Museum of Astana to see over 10,000 artefacts found along the Silk Road before heading to Thousand Buddha Caves and Emin Minaret, built in 1777 and brilliantly mixing Chinese and Islamic designs. You’ll also meet with a local Uyghur family while in Turpan, which gives you the opportunity learn to make Uyghur foods and get in touch with this minority Chinese culture.

Connect to Urumqi and fly to Kashgar, a city on the western edge of China that seems more Middle Eastern than Chinese. In Kashgar, you’ll explore Islamic Chinese culture by visiting the massive dome of Aba Khoja Mausoleum, the Great Bazaar, which is the largest trade market in northwestern China, and Id Kah Mosque, the largest mosque in the nation. Fly back to Urumqi and close out your journey in this trade centre of Central Asia. Head to the Xinjiang Provincial Museum to learn about the city’s booming infrastructure and long history as a hub between Chinese, Arabic, and Cyrillic cultures. Get a final taste for life along the Silk Road at the Erdaoqiao Bazaar before heading to the airport to connect to your next destination.

The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel was founded in 1995. Situated against the backdrop of the picturesque Mingsha Sand Dunes in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, the hotel captures the spirit of the Tang Dynasty with its unique architectural design - the large rooftops and winding corridors of the Han and Tang dynasties; the typical enclosed courtyard style design and mud walls of the north-western part of China; and the replica of the late Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties furniture. All these work together to recapture the flavour of a bygone era with their simplicity and use of natural building materials.
