FIRST-CLASS | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Discover the most popular sites of Japan on this classic vacation. Start in Kyoto, where you’ll explore temples and gardens. Continue to Hiroshima to learn about its tragic history before connecting to Tokyo to tour the capital as well as nearby Mt. Fuji.

This 8-day Japanese vacation takes you to some of the country’s classic highlights, including Kyoto, Hiroshima, Tokyo, and Mt. Fuji. It includes first-class accommodations and a mix of private and shared tours, and a 7-day Japan Rail Pass.

Your trip to Japan begins in Kyoto, the former imperial capital and often considered the most beautiful city in the nation. You’ll explore this city of temples and palaces on a guided walking tour, which starts at the Golden Pavilion of Kinkaku-ji, continues to Nijo Castle, and explores the grounds of Kiyomizu-dera Temple before ending in the Gion district, which is renowned for its old samurai houses and geisha salons. You’ll have another day at leisure in Kyoto to walk through the haunting bamboo grove of Arashiyama or hike up the hillside of Fushimi Inari Taisha, passing through the hundreds of vermillion gates lining the mountain.

Activate your Japan Rail Pass and ride the rails to continue your Japan vacation in Hiroshima. Tour the peace park and learn about the city’s tragic history, when it was destroyed by an atomic bomb at the end of World War II. You’ll see the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Museum before you connect to nearby Miyajima Island to see the famous Itsukushima Shrine submerged in the tide.

Jump back on the bullet train and ride to Tokyo, stopping off at Himeji Castle, arguably the most famous castle in the nation, en route. In Tokyo, you’ll take advantage of the great subway system to explore this massive metropolis littered with futuristic wonders and ancient temples. A walking tour takes you to Senso-ji, the largest and oldest Buddhist temple in the city, as well as the nearby Nakamise shopping street before you connect to the Imperial Palace Gardens and go on a shopping spree in upscale Ginza. On your final full day, you’ll ride the train to Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station to explore the famous natural wonder at 2,300m. During your tour, you’ll cruise on the crater lake of Lake Ashi and head up Mt. Komagatake for some of the best views of Fuji. Return to Tokyo for a final night in the capital.

At the end of your trip to Japan, connect to Haneda Airport for onward travels.

Day 2

Full Day Kyoto Gold Highlights Tour

Start your full day tour at one of Kyoto’s most celebrated sites, the world-famous Fushimi Inari Shrine. The shrine complex spans over the entire Mt. Inari (233m/765ft) and thousands of bright red torii gates line the mountain trail. You will visit the main shrine hall and the famed vermillion gate tunnel.

Next, travel to central Kyoto to visit Sanjusangendo Temple, the longest wooden structure in Japan. Inside, you will find 1001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist saint of Mercy.

Then visit another celebrated site, Kiyomizu-dera Temple. This temple is older than Kyoto as the capital of Japan and is famous for its wooden platform stage, the Kiyomizu Butai. The massive stage was constructed out of wood and joints – no nails. At four story’s high, it was once a popular wish-making spot.

In the afternoon visit Kinkakuji Temple, a favorite to millions of visitors each year. You will quickly see why this jewel set into the northern hills is one of the most visited sites in Japan, it is covered in real gold leaf and vibrant at any time of year no matter the weather.

Continue to Kintano-tenmangu, a remarkable shrine to scholarship that was built to appease the spirit of an angry ghost. The shrine’s surrounding entertainment district was first built after a fire in 1444, when a large section of the temple had to be rebuilt, and the remaining timber was used to construct 7 tea houses that became the first ‘flower town’ or Geisha district in Kyoto.

Explore the Kamishichiken district, every bit as charming as its more touristy cousin the Gion district, with the added bonuses of fewer crowds and excellent photo opportunities.

After the bombing, Memorial Park was created and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the attack. Stroll through the park and discover the many memorials, monuments and statues in the park before heading into the Museum itself.

From Hiroshima, a short train and ferry ride will take you to Miyajima Island. A small sacred island located in the Island Sea, it has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. Here you will find perhaps the most photographed site in Japan - The Floating Torii Gate. Designated as one of Japan's '3 Most Beautiful Views', the shrine dates back to the 6th century with the present structure dating back to the 12th century. You will have time to explore the island and its many shrines and temples and sample local goodies like maple leaf-shaped cakes.
