Overview

Take a trip to Aberdare National Park on your Kenya Vacation

Aberdare National Park covers the higher areas of the Aberdare Mountain Range of Central Kenya, located to the west of Mount Kenya and to the north of Nairobi. With mountain peaks above 4,300 km (14,000 ft), it is the highest national park in Africa on Kenya vacation.

Established in 1950, the park covers an area of 766 square kilometres. This area includes mountains (the third highest range in Kenya), valleys, rivers, waterfalls, moorland, bamboo forests and rainforests (depending on altitude). There is also a wide array of wildlife such as lions, leopards, African elephants and African hunting dogs, waterbucks, Cape buffalo and the black and white Colobus monkey. The wildlife is best viewed on a Kenyan safari from the famed tree-top accommodation and walkways that have been raised into the forest canopy offering an interesting vantage point.

Aberdare National Park holds great cultural and historical significance. The Kikuyu people (the largest ethnic group in Kenya) believe that the mountain range is one of the homes of Ngai or God. Caves found in the park are famous for hiding field marshal General Dedan Kimathi and his guerilla troops during the Mau Mau uprising of the 1950s.

I wouldn’t recommend self-driving as Kenya’s roads can be tricky, and they drive on the left side, which can confuse visitors used to North American systems
