Insider Travel Tips

Plan your unique journey to China's captivating landscapes.

How do I plan a trip to China?

Everyone has their own style of travel, and we have the expertise to plan a trip to China that caters to you. Want to cruise down the Li River to experience the mystical landscape of rice paddies and karst rocks, or visit the world famous Great Wall of China nestled in the mountains just beyond Beijing? Discover tailor-made travel and explore China with the help of a Goway Destination Specialist.

How much does it typically cost for a trip to China?

Given the size and number of destinations in China, vacation budgets of various sizes can be accommodated. Overall, traveling within the cities of China is pricier than other Asian destinations. For a high end vacation, it’s recommended to allocate $500 per day, per individual traveller, not including international airfare. For a mid range trip, plan to budget $350 per day, per traveller. With the help of a Goway Destination Specialist, you can create a tailor-made China itinerary to suit your budget.

What documentation is required to visit China?

Visitors from Canada and the United States need to apply for a visa, also known as an L visa, in advance of their travel plans. This can be done via your Goway Travel Specialist, or the online Chinese Visa Application Services. Do check the Chinese government website for all up to date requirements. Typically the visa application requires a passport that is valid for at least 180 days, with at least two blank pages, a recently taken passport photo, proof of return air ticket, and confirmed accommodation plans.

How do you get around while in China?

China has a good and vast public transportation system, including high speed trains that can connect you from corner to corner. Travelling between major cities is best done via train, but flights are also an option. Transportation service providers vary by region, so be sure to engage your Goway Destination Specialist to arrange your transportation diligently. While in China, there are restrictions on the use of certain websites and apps, like Google. Be sure to use China’s local search engines to find information about certain places or historical sites while you are visiting.

Is it safe to visit China?

Generally travelling to China is safe for travellers. Being alert and aware, as with travelling to most destinations, is crucial. Planning your trip out ahead of time, and practicing typical travel safety is paramount. Scams such as an overly friendly local requesting a photo, then offering an invitation to an overpriced tea house, can be avoided by refusing to follow any stranger, anywhere or anytime. Do plan to carry your passport with you at all times, as proof of identification.

What currency does China use?

China uses the Chinese Yuan (CNY), which trades around $0.20 CAD to ¥1 CNY. Do check exchange rates before travelling, as rates fluctuate. In big cities, less cash is used, but otherwise always plan to carry some local currency. Before travelling to China, convert your currency into Yuan at a currency exchange establishment or the airport. In China, at local markets, especially smaller markets and taxis, business is done using cash, so plan to carry cash with you.

What is the tipping culture in China?

Tipping is not mandatory in China. Rounding up the bill, or leaving change may be appreciated at mid range spots where you are being served, especially in tourist centric areas. When dining at some fine dining restaurants, you may see a service charge added to bills. However, this charge does not go toward staff. It would be acceptable to tip a modest 5-10% at these establishments for exceptional service. For staff at high end hotels, such as housekeeping or bell services, a modest tip of (¥5–15) is appreciable.

Is China LGBTQ+ friendly?

China is not known to be an overly LGBTQ+ friendly travel destination. China has no legal protections in place against the discrimination of the LGBTQ+ community. There is censorship in place for any media depicting the LGBTQ+ community. Support for same-sex couples is limited. That said, most travellers find the country to be tolerant, especially in highly trafficked tourist destinations. Plan to conduct yourself in a respectful way publicly, with no public displays of affection.

Our first trip with Goway was a total joy. Shalini worked with me to plan a trip for 5 adults to Portugal. She is a gem! Always responded quickly and offered great suggestions for activities, worked with our preferences and created an ideal itinerary for a week in Porto and Lisbon. The tours were excellent with engaging local guides. The food tour in Lisbon was a highlight. Everything was top notch - flight schedule, hotels, activities, even the weather! Patricia

It is with the utmost pleasure and heartfelt appreciation that I share my exceptional experience working with Taha Colombowala, Goway's distinguished Groups Specialist. Our journey together began in October 2023, when Taha took the helm in orchestrating what was to be a remarkable group trip to Ghana. When unforeseen circumstances necessitated a change in plans, Taha demonstrated his extraordinary expertise by recommending Morocco as an alternative destination — a suggestion that proved to be nothing short of absolutely brilliant! From the very first interaction to the final farewell, Taha has been a consummate professional in every sense of the word. His lightning-fast response times, encyclopedic knowledge of destinations, and remarkable ability to pivot seamlessly under pressure are truly second to none. What sets Taha apart, however, is not only his professional acumen but also his warm, patient, and genuinely enthusiastic attitude toward accommodating the unique needs and personalities of every member of our group. Taha Colombowala is, without question, a shining star within the Goway family, and an extraordinary ambassador for everything the brand represents. I cannot recommend him highly enough — he has exceeded every expectation and then some. Working with Taha has been an absolute privilege, and I look forward to many more incredible adventures ahead!DESIREE DUCKETT

We recently completed a custom Vietnam tour organized by Goway, and it was everything we asked for and more. We would definitely choose Goway again. The true highlights of our trip, however, were our two guides: Vu Dang and Thien. They truly made our experience unforgettable. Both were incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful, and kind. Their pride in their Vietnamese heritage shone through in every conversation, making our learning experience both deep and engaging. We learned so much in such a short time, and it was always fascinating. I would highly recommend these two guides to anyone visiting Vietnam!Laura Derbyshire

Everything was expertly planned, from the drivers to the hotels to the tours to the flights. We particularly enjoyed Hobart and the animal sanctuary, Adelaide and the trip to Kangaroo Island, Melbourne and the evening tour with dinner and drinks, and Sydney with the private boat cruise of the Harbour. We will definitely use Goway again.SARA Wiebe

There were 4 travelers on this trip. All of us were in our late 70's. We started planning this trip 6 months prior to our travel date and had a lot of questions regarding this trip. Our Goway Travel Specialist, Karen Larrota, always answered our questions in a timely and complete manner. We traveled to Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos, The Sacred Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu, and Cusco in Peru. Not only were the destinations and accommodations excellent, but every tour guide and driver were beyond excellent. The entire trip went smoothly every step of the way, which was amazing given the fact that there were numerous flights and hotels included in our package. We found out that the tour company that Goway used, Condor Travel, checked on us with our guide to make sure we were doing OK which we thought was very nice but also amusing as we are fairly fit older adults. Would also like to mention that we did a cruise thru the Galapagos on the Galapagos Legend which was arranged thru Go Galapagos - Kleintouurs. This portion of our tour was also excellent as were the wildlife guides and staff. We continue to discuss how wonderful this trip was with our family and friends and how wonderful this experience was. Would definately use Goway for our travel needs in the future.Dianne

Aylin is an exceptionally proficient advisor. Coordinating my clients simultaneously often feels like herding cats, but she has remained patient and accommodating through every modification and delay. Goway continues to be my go-to for complex itineraries, and they never disappoint.Nick Cron, ACC
