Located in the northwestern part of India, Amritsar lies on the main Grand Trunk Road, connecting Delhi to Lahore, Pakistan and is one of the largest cities in Punjab state on India tours.
Amritsar is the spiritual centre for the Sikh religion. The Golden Temple is the most significant shrine of the Sikhs and one of the oldest Sikh Gurudwaras. This religious complex features various structures including a Sikh museum.
Rich in Sikh history, Amritsar is where the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre took place on April 13, 1919 - one of the Sikhs’ sacred days, killing and injuring over 1000 men, women, and children. The 10-minute shooting rampage was ordered by Brigadier-General Dyer of the British Army who feared a major insurrection after days of protests and retaliatory violence on both sides. The Jallianwala Bagh is located minutes away from the Golden Temple and now acts as a memorial. Bullet holes can still be seen in the walls and the monument encases the well which was used to hide from the shooting rampage, in which dozens lost their lives.
Amritsar also played a role in the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan, causing riots and violence against Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus.

We started planning this trip 6 months prior to our travel date and had a lot of questions regarding this trip. Our Goway Travel Specialist, Karen Larrota, always answered our questions in a timely and complete manner. We traveled to Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos, The Sacred Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu, and Cusco in Peru. Not only were the destinations and accommodations excellent, but every tour guide and driver were beyond excellent. We found out that the tour company that Goway used, Condor Travel, checked on us with our guide to make sure we were doing OK which we thought was very nice but also amusing as we are fairly fit older adults.
