Discover the Dynamic Capital: Seoul

A trip to South Korea wouldn't be complete without a visit to its bustling capital, Seoul. This metropolis teems with energy, offering an array of experiences that cater to every sort of traveller. Begin your exploration at the Gyeongbokgung Palace, a stunning testimony to Korea's dynastic history. Here, the Changing of the Guard ceremony paints a vivid picture of bygone eras.

For those who seek modern thrills, a jaunt down the Gangnam district, famed for its sleek skyscrapers and high-end boutiques, provides insight into Seoul's cutting-edge lifestyle. As evening descends, the vibrant streets of Myeongdong come alive with tantalizing street food and dazzling fashion finds—perfect for those looking to indulge in the local shopping culture.

Cultural Immersion in Gyeongju

Often referred to as "the museum without walls," Gyeongju offers a deep dive into Korea's ancient past. Once the capital of the Silla Kingdom, this city is replete with UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Bulguksa Temple, with its intricate architecture and serene atmosphere, provides a peaceful retreat into the country's Buddhist heritage.

Visitors can also explore the Tumuli Park, where grassy mounds hide the secrets of ancient Silla royalty. For an immersive experience, consider joining one of the many escorted tours to understand the significance of these sites more profoundly.

Scenic Beauty of Jeju Island

No South Korean itinerary is complete without a trip to the picturesque Jeju Island, renowned for its natural beauty and distinct culture. Nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike find solace in its diverse landscapes. From the striking Hallasan Mountain, the highest in South Korea, to the idyllic beaches of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, Jeju offers a perfect backdrop for both relaxation and adventure.

For a touch of local uniqueness, visit the Haenyeo Museum to learn about the famous 'women divers' who have been harvesting the island’s seafood using traditional methods for centuries.

Culinary Adventures Await

A true highlight of any journey to Korea is its food. Korean cuisine is a tantalizing mix of spicy, sweet, and savoury. From bustling street markets to high-end restaurants, there's no shortage of delicious dishes to try. Treat yourself to a traditional Korean barbecue—it's a social event as much as a meal—and savour the sizzling flavours of bulgogi or galbi.

Don't miss the opportunity to sample Korea's iconic street foods like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and hotteok (sweet pancakes) during your adventures in cities like Busan. Every meal in Korea is an opportunity to partake in a centuries-old culinary heritage, making food tours a popular inclusion in many trips to South Korea.

Practical Travel Tips for Group Experiences

  • Best Time to Visit: South Korea is stunning year-round, but spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are particularly pleasant with their mild weather and beautiful scenery.
  • Transport: The country's extensive public transport network makes group trips to South Korea a breeze. The KTX (Korea Train Express) connects major cities swiftly and comfortably.
  • Language: While Korean is the official language, English is commonly understood in major urban areas, especially in customer service settings.
  • Etiquette: Respect local customs by removing shoes when entering traditional accommodation, and bowing slightly as a gesture of politeness.

Whether you're drawn by its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, or delectable cuisine, South Korea is a destination that captivates and inspires. Ultimately, whether exploring on your own or through meticulously planned South Korea escorted tours, this dynamic nation beckons visitors to dive deep into its many splendours. Why not pack your bags and set out on a journey to experience all that South Korea has to offer?

Try to stay at a traditional hanok accommodation (similar to a ryokan) with hanok dinner, which involves enjoying Korean cuisine, aka jeongsik (course meals) with banchan (side dishes). It's a rustic, traditional experience that all globetrotters will love.

Umbrellas are common; you can pick them up everywhere as well, but you'll find on sunny days as well as rainy ones that locals are using umbrellas and without one, you'll get a poke in the head now and again as you're walking on busy sidewalks.

Avoid July/August, as they are the rainiest months, with heavy flooding even in the cities, and temple walks become difficult. I also recommend avoiding Chuseok in September, a six-day holiday where everything is closed.

We had a blast and felt covered by GoAway throughout. This was our first time using a travel agent and Melissa and her team made it easy. I also appreciated the quick communication while on our trip. I only wish that we got our official itinerary and tickets sooner as we did not receive them until a week prior. But it is busy season so I understand. Courtney McCarthy

Our trip to Japan was great. All our Goway arrangements preformed like clockwork and the guides for the tours were wonderful. Unfortunately, Mt. Fuji was in total fog but at least the lunch was very good and so was the drum solo, also our tour guide kept our spirits up ( she was the best). Taryn picked hotels that were very convenient to the meeting point of our tours which was much appreciated and organized all aspects of our trip perfectly. So from our airport pickup to our last day in Tokyo everything ran very smoothly so we have used Goway before and will certainly use it again and reccommend Goway to others.JW
