Lucerne is a city and municipality nestled in the heart of Switzerland on Lake Lucerne. It is a key highlight of any trip to Switzerland and an ideal starting point for excursions into central Switzerland, the Swiss Alps, and around Lake Lucerne. The city and municipality of Lucerne boast an unmistakable cityscape with incredible views of Lake Lucerne and several other key landmarks in the historic Old Town, including the 14th-century Chapel Bridge, the 17th-century Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche), and the medieval fortified Musegg wall (Museggmauer).
Lucerne's compact Old Town is best explored on foot, while lake cruises, cogwheel railways and cable cars climb Mount Pilatus and Rigi. Travellers who purchase the Lucerne Travel Pass can enjoy unlimited travel for three to 10 days on trains, buses, boats, and several cableways in Central Switzerland. Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) bring mild weather and lighter crowds, while summer weekends (July to August) are often the busiest.
