Insider Travel Tips

Navigating Madagascar's travel essentials: visas, health precautions, and currency.

Visas

Here's some bad news: visas for Madagascar, previously free for most visitors, now cost 25 euros for a 30-day stay or 50 euros for a 90-day stay (price may vary). The new visa fees will streamline the entry process for visitors.

Malaria

Madagascar is a beautiful island but also a high-risk area for malaria. Malaria pills called Malaron are available in pharmacies in the bigger cities, but unfortunately, they come with severe side effects. To minimize the side effects, taking them in the evening rather than the morning is recommended, as the sun's heat can increase the side effects. However, even if taken at night, malaria can cause nausea or diarrhea.

Vaccination

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory in most parts of Africa but not Madagascar. Tour operators recommend getting a malaria shot before visiting the country, but it is not required.

Money

For your trip to Madagascar, be sure to bring plenty of cash! The local currency is Ariary, and you won't be able to use your bank card or debit card anywhere in the country. Some larger hotels and restaurants accept credit cards, but there are no ATMs to get cash with your bank card. A credit card is a must-have in Madagascar, but make sure it's a Visa or Mastercard, as most banks only accept those cards. You can find an IBN bank in the bigger cities that also accept Mastercards.
