  • Saladin Citadel - Cairo

Egypt, probably the world’s oldest civilization, is a treasure trove for history and archaeology enthusiasts who undertake an Egypt tour. It has borrowed from Greek, Roman, Christian and Arab influences over time. But even the less enthusiastic will marvel at what is on offer. Imagine a country basically desert totally redeemed by the River Nile which runs through a fertile well watered lush valley.

Cairo, an apparently chaotic metropolis does not take long to become acclimatized to. Located at the edge of the city are the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, at the last outpost before finding oneself in the desert. Not too far away are Memphis and Saqqara with their own pyramids and treasures. A must visit on Egypt trips is the superb Egyptian Museum bursting at the seams with relics from the past. Also take time to visit the Citadel and the Khan El Khalili Bazaar to round off your stay.

What are the top ancient places to see in Egypt?

The best way to capture the essence of ancient Egypt is on a Nile Cruise sailing between Luxor and Aswan. This is an excellent way to not only relax and enjoy a short cruise on a trip to Egypt but also of not missing anything important. In Luxor, you will have an abundance of ancient sites to visit – Luxor and Karnak Temples and the Valleys of the Kings and Queens are all nearby.

Even en route to Aswan, you will discover some major archaeological wonders. Aswan offers the visitor Elephantine Island with its excavations of ancient sites, an excellent Botanical Garden and a Felucca ride on the Nile. On an Egypt tour, take the time from here to spend a half day at Abu Simbel with its huge reassembled monument to the Great Ramses II.

Alexandria, on the Mediterranean, provides glimpses into Egypt’s past with Pompey’s Pillar and its Roman Theatre but that’s not all. The Bibliotheca Aexandrina is a huge modern library and an architectural modern wonder.

If time allows on an Egypt vacation, also consider a visit to the exotic Sinai Peninsula and St. Catherine’s Monastery or one of the excellent Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.
