Overview
Take a trip to Siem Reap on your Cambodia Vacation
Located in northwestern Cambodia and surrounded by rice paddies, Siem Reap is the capital of Siem Reap Province and is nicknamed the ‘Great Gate to Angkor’ for Angkor Wat tours.
A cluster of old villages originally built around individual Buddhist pagodas, Siem Reap’s main town (including the Old Market area) features colonial-style buildings blended with Chinese architecture and includes shopping and commercial districts. Enjoy a relaxing massage, a traditional Apsara dance performance, and many of the shops and international restaurants Siem Reap has to offer.
With its tourism boom, Siem Reap has been rapidly developing since the mid-90s. Although it’s become quite modern with its new hotels, resorts, bars, and cafes, Siem Reap has managed to conserve much of its culture and tradition, making it a perfect spot to experience the old and the new in Cambodia travel.
Angkor Wat, Siem Reap’s major attraction, is the largest Hindu Temple complex in the world. Located in Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Angkor Wat was built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. Containing magnificent remains of the Khmer civilization, and using Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat has become a symbol for Cambodia.
Other attractions in and around Siem Reap include Angkor Thom, Angkor National Museum, and Cambodian Cultural Village, as well as other cultural sites on Cambodia tours.
