Overview

Take a trip to Hangzhou on your China Vacation

When considering where to go on a China vacation, Hangzhou has been listed as New York Times' “52 places to go in 2016” and Travel + Leisure's “where to go in 2016”.The city is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou and the Grand Canal. And this autumn it’ll become the first Chinese city to host the Group of 20 summits.

Located just 100kms southwest of Shanghai, Hangzhou is one of China’s most scenic and prosperous cities. As one of China’s ancient national capitals during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), Marco Polo declared Hangzhou to be “the most beautiful and elegant city in the world”.

The capital of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou is geographically located in a prime position. As the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta, the west end of Hangzhou Bay, the lower reaches of Qiantang River, and the southern terminus of the Grand Canal (Beijing-Hangzhou), Hangzhou is one of the most important central cities on China tours.

Well known for its silk and tea production, Hangzhou is even more considered a tourist destination. West Lake is Hangzhou’s most famous, natural attraction. Located in Hangzhou’s west end, West Lake is surrounded by mountains and is lined with historic and cultural sites, such as Solitary Hill, Linyin Temple and Six Harmonies Pagoda. Immersed in natural beauty and a true inspiration to Chinese gardeners, poets, and painters, West Lake was recently made a UNESCO World Heritage Site, commended as influencing garden design in China, Japan and Korea over the centuries.

Museums, temples, and pagodas provide much of Hangzhou’s cultural history on China tour packages, as does Qing He Fang Street, a shopping street for tourists, featuring elements of the Song Dynasty.

Enjoy causeways, parks, and a tea plantation tour along with local restaurants, teahouses, and shops, in this industrial yet beautiful city. Enriched in Chinese culture, Hangzhou is a must-see for any tourist!

It is very enjoyable to travel in China by high-speed train, but you should avoid travelling during the National Holidays from October 1 to 7 and from May 1 to 4, as they get extra busy.

Jinxian Road in Shanghai is a small road but full of superb, Michelin-recognized restaurants. I highly recommend visiting here on your travels to China.

China's many beautiful natural sights and rich cultural areas are what I love most about visiting. Some of my personal favourites are Yunnan's Shangri-La, Xinjiang, Zhangjiajie, and the 5 Great Mountains.
