A Traveller's Guide to Malaysia

Everything you need to know about travelling to Malaysia.

Essential Facts

Currency

The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) is the national currency of Malaysia. You will find many cash exchange places throughout the country, making it easy to change currency during your trip. However, US dollars are the most widely accepted foreign currency, especially in tourist areas.

Language

Malay or Malaysian is the official language in Malaysia. English is considered the second official language of Malaysia, making it an easy destination to travel through.

Best Time to Go

Most of the year Malaysia is hot and humid. However, if you're looking for a break from the humidity, you’ll want to visit between December and April. During this time, you’ll still likely need an umbrella, as the equatorial climate often calls for random bursts of rain, but expect temperatures to be around 23°C–32°C/73°F–90°F.

Climate

Malaysia has an equatorial climate, meaning it’s hot and humid most of the year. The southwest experiences monsoon season from May to September, while the northeast sees more rainfall October to March. The annual average temperature hovers around 27°C/80°F.

Ideal Traveller

Nature lovers and culture seekers will love this destination for its cultural diversity, long-standing traditions, and lush rainforests. First-time travellers will want to ensure they check out the ultra-modern Kuala Lumpur or delve-deeper into the country's colonial history in Malacca and Ipoh. Malaysia is also a great place to relax on a beach, escape into the jungle, or hike a mountain.

Essential Sights in Malaysia

nightime Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur

The capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur amazes with its modern skyline and numerous landmarks including Petronas Twin Towers, which stand 451m tall and are the world’s tallest twin skyscrapers. Growing from a small Chinese tin-mining town, the city has become a cultural melting pot offering the best deals for anything from cheap 5-star hotels to delicious food and great shopping at the Central Market or Petaling Street Flea Market. Much of the city’s classic architectural highlights remain intact to this day including the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station or Kampong Bharu, one of the last surviving Malay villages.

Penang

Penang sits on the northwest coast of Malaysia near Malacca Strait. It’s an island state made of two parts: Penang Island and mainland Seberang Perai. Its capital city, George Town, is a popular stop for war history buffs due to its houses and shops predating World War II; the town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also enjoy the day relaxing on the beaches of Tanjung Bungah.

Malacca

This unique city sits on Malaysia’s west coast and is known for its ancient landmarks and heritage buildings that reflect Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences. Visit heritage sites like the 17th-century Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, one of the oldest Chinese temples in Malaysia, or enjoy an evening stroll down Jonker Street’s Chinatown and shop at the city's night market and antique stores. Soaring high above the city is the impressive Taming Sari Revolving Tower, which offers amazing panoramic views of the city of Malacca.

Langkawi Island

Consisting of 99 idyllic islands stretching along Malaysia’s west coast near the Thai border, Langkawi Island is known for pristine beaches, exotic rainforests, and breathtaking turquoise waters that offer the perfect blend of paradise and adventure. Nature lovers looking to escape the city lights will love this island, which also offers excellent diving opportunities in Pantai Cenang. Spend the day trekking through the wetlands and limestone caves of Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. For an authentic Pan-Asian food experience, head out to the colourful night market.

Other Highlights of Malaysia Off the Beaten Path

orangutan in Sabah

Sabah in Borneo

Divided by three countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, Borneo is home to an ancient biodiverse rainforest, rare wildlife like orangutans and cloud leopards, and a rich Indigenous culture. Visit the state of Sabah in Malaysia and spend a day or two exploring tropical islands like Pulau Tiga, the original Survivor Island, hiking Mount Kinabalu, one of Southeast Asia’s most challenging climbs, or simply cruising along the Kinabatangan River, sailing past the dense forests to see some of the most amazing wildlife from crocodiles to hornbills to proboscis monkeys.

Ipoh

Located near the Kinta River north of Kuala Lumpur is Ipoh, Malaysia's quiet colonial town. With its coffee shops (kedai kopi), white cliffs, and eye-catching street art, Ipoh is the perfect blend of old meets new. Split by the Kinta River, the city’s charm is captured through its impressive cave temples in Perak Tong, Sam Poh, and Kek Lok Tong.

Top Activities and Experiences in Malaysia

Batu Caves

See the Petronas Twin Towers

Completed in 1998, the Petronas Twin Towers were dubbed the tallest twin buildings in the world between 1998 and 2004. Experience Kuala Lumpur's city landscape from 88-storeys above or go shopping at Suria, an upmarket shopping mall at the base of the towers.

Hike to the Batu Caves

A series of caves and cave temples hidden within limestone hills sets the backdrop for one of Malaysia's holiest Hindu sites. Climb the steep 272-step stairway leading to Cathedral Cave, which is guarded by a giant golden statue of the Hindu deity Lord Murugan. Explore the grounds to spot monkeys playing and take in beautiful Hindu art that adds to the beauty of this site.

Orangutan Encounters at a Sanctuary

Spend the day at Sepilok Forest Reserve, home to hundreds of orphaned and injured orangutans. Follow the paths to the outdoor nursery where you can sit and watch them play and interact with each other as they regain their strength before returning to the rainforest.

Wildlife Viewing along the Kinabatangan River

Located in northeastern Sabah is Malaysia’s second largest river. Spend the day cruising along the river capturing pictures of some of the best wildlife in Southeast Asia, including pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, and orangutans deep within the shorelands of the majestic rainforest.

Beach Escape

From Pulau Langkawi to nearby Pulau Tuba, Malaysia has many beachside getaways. A few days relaxing along white-sand beaches, limestone caves, and jungle-covered hills is a great way to end your trip before heading back home.

See Penang’s Captivating Street Art

Penang’s street art is a popular tourist attraction in George Town. Most famous of its many pieces is the 20ft mural of a young girl in blue pyjamas called “Little Girl in Blue” painted by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic. Stroll the streets from Muntri Street to Weld Quay to take in the iconic murals.

Tips for Sustainable Travel

Langkawi Malaysia beach

When travelling through Malaysia there are many things you can do in order to help protect the county’s habitats, culture, and environment. When leaving your hotel, remember to switch the lights off or consider re-using your linen during short stays to reduce using unnecessary energy and water. Be respectful of local cultures and ask to take pictures before snapping a shot. When visiting the beaches, respect the ecosystem and don’t take anything home with you, including shells and corals. Also be sure to clean up any garbage you make during your visit.

Where to Go Next

With many local airlines flying direct to and from Malaysia, adding another destination during your travel is easy. If you’d like to experience more of Asia’s religious monuments and culture, Thailand or India are good options. Singapore and Vietnam are also easy connections.

I found this agency when trying to find a trip to New Zealand and Australia. I never heard of them before, so I had to do some research to make sure they were legit. This trip was going to be seemingly more in cost, so I needed to feel everything was going to go as planned and I was not going to be scammed. I had Natasa Jaric as my Specialist. Her and I worked on an itinerary that suited my needs. She is very friendly and knowledgeable. I had back to back tours for three weeks straight, as well as transfers and hopper flights. This was what I wanted, as this was my " One and Done" for this region. My transportation, hotels, tours and flights went as planned. Of course, Mother Nature dictates some plans and one activity was cancelled. I am getting a refund through the agency. Please book with confidence! This company is reputable and delivers on the itinerary. I had the opportunity to review each part of my itinerary with Natasa prior to leaving to make sure all looked correct. My trip was unforgettable!!! Thank you Goway Travel for making this trip so effortless and smooth.Consumer

Goway gave us a magical holiday in Southeast Asia. From the organization of the transportation, guides and drivers, hotels and tours, everything ran like clockwork with quality accommodations, experienced guides and drivers and amazing excursions. We had a wedding in Bali Indonesia that was the stimulus for visiting 7 countries Cebu Philippines, Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An Vietnam, Siem Reap Cambodia, Bangkok Thailand, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Bali, Indonesia and Taipei, Taiwan. We had marvelous tour guides and drivers. All of them spoke excellent English, had years of experience, were very knowledgeable and passionate about their country and its heritage, very friendly, funny, patient , flexible and accommodating. In Bali we were able to add another tour when we changed hotels and the guide was able to accommodate our friends from Canada to go with us. The drivers were excellent considering the traffic volumes and what we would consider complex driving movements by cars, trucks, bicycles, vespas, tuk tuks and motorcycles. The hotels we were placed in were five stars, with exceptional breakfast which showcased the country's food. We were always able to find ethnic food from that area that we could try. I would highly recommend the Sofitel Legend Metropole in Hanoi. The hotel even has a bunker from the Vietnam War that you can tour if you are staying there. Also the Komaneka at Bisma in Ubud Indonesia was a beautiful property and we were treated like royalty by being placed in a villa with our own swimming pool. All the hotels except one had universal outlets. For any of the Temples whether Buddha or Hindu, churches or Mosques, you need covered shoulders, covered knees and covered toes. Some like Indonesia provide sarongs as part of the entrance fee. For tours the I highly recommend the following: The overnight Ginger Cruise of Halong Bay. The suites were like what you see in the movies of Chinese junket's. You visit a secluded fishing village, the scenery is amazing, the food was excellent and we were taught how to make spring rolls and went squid fishing. The half day cooking class in Cambodia was an amazing experience. We were taken out to a village farm with a multi-generational Cambodian family. The farm had power but no running water. Water was gathered from the river or rainfall. We went to other farms around the village to look at the crops of herbs and vegetables, including rice that were used in the dinner. Also visited the village market for fruits, meats and fish. You were taught how to prepare the foods with the women of the farm while the men set up tables, chairs and lighting for the evening meal. The whole family plus our guide and driver ate the prepared meal under the stars. It was totally awesome. Also don't miss the cooking class at the Blue Elephant in Bangkok. This was a class of 12 students, again with a market tour to select ingredients for what we would be cooking. We prepared four courses which were first demonstrated then we went into a kitchen with stations where each of us prepared that course. Afterwards we sat down to eat the meal that we had prepared. For a different authentic experience The Dark Foodie Tour in Siem Reap by Vespa was one of the highlights of the tour. This tour you spend time with the Cambodian people in the night market, bars and restaurants and even a local fair. You are driven around the city like the locals on Vespa's. You will see lots of temples but two you don't want to miss is Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Wat Suthat in Thailand. Both are astounding and if you get a chance circle back to view the Wat Suthat at night where the lights on the temple show off its beauty. Chris Lawson

We recently enjoyed a tour around Australia arranged by Natasa Jarik at Goway Travel. The trip lasted 10 days, too short to do justice to all of Australia, but enough to give us a taste of a fascinating country. The trip was excellent, exactly what we were looking for. The complicated logistics all worked out smoothly and perfectly. Everything was on time and as advertised. The individual tours were excellent, the guides were absolutely first rate, the accommodations all worked out well (especially the central location of Swissotel in Sydney), and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip. One of the really enjoyable days was day 1, when we arrived early in the morning after a long plane flight from the US and spent the day walking through the parks and gardens and around the harbor in Sydney, visiting a couple of museums, and having a wonderful dinner at a little restaurant around the corner from our hotel. Sydney is a beautiful city! We missed spotting a cassowary in the rain forest, but we saw lots of roos and koalas and emus and dingoes and wombats and crocodiles and wallabies at Kangaroo Island and the Daintree rain forest, snorkeled at the Great Barrier Reef, and enjoyed a very interesting tour around Sydney. The arrangements were handled efficiently and easily. Thank you, Natasa, for arranging a perfect tour for us!Mike Cherry
