Insider Travel Tips

Portugal is one of Europe’s most welcoming destinations, blending old-world charm with modern conveniences. Its compact size, excellent infrastructure, and warm hospitality make it easy to explore, whether you’re navigating Lisbon’s cobbled streets or road-tripping through the Algarve. While the country is straightforward for most travellers, a few insider tips will help ensure your experience is smooth and stress-free.

“Portugal is one of Europe’s friendliest countries,” says Destination Specialist Josie Pileggi. “Everyone greets you with warmth, even if you don’t speak the language.”

To start planning your own adventure in Portugal, talk to one of our Destination Specialists today.

Practical Information for Visiting Portugal

Visitors from Canada and the United States do not require a visa for stays under 90 days, making Portugal an accessible option for both short and extended vacations. The official currency is the euro, and while credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist hubs, carrying small amounts of cash is useful in rural areas and local markets.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; leaving five to 10 percent in restaurants or rounding up the bill for excellent service is customary. Portugal is a very safe country, with low crime rates, though common-sense precautions apply, particularly in crowded areas of Lisbon and Porto.

Driving is a great way to explore beyond major cities. Portugal’s highways are in good condition, and EU licenses are accepted. Do note that many toll roads require electronic payment. Electrical current runs on 230V using Type C and F plugs, so pack an adapter if needed.

“Download an offline map app like Google Maps or Maps.me before exploring rural areas,” says Destination Specialist Josie Pileggi. “It’s a lifesaver.”

Health and Safety in Portugal

Tap water across Portugal is safe to drink, however on the Islands, bottle or filtered water is recommended for a nicer taste.Pharmacies are also widely available for everyday health needs. Portugal offers modern medical facilities and high-quality care in urban centres. The number to dial for emergencies is 112.

Socially, Portugal is known for its warmth and inclusivity. Major cities like Lisbon and Porto are LGBTQ+ friendly, and travellers of all backgrounds are welcomed with genuine hospitality. Rural areas tend to be more traditional, so modest dress is appreciated in churches and small villages.

For more insight into Portugal’s social norms and values, explore its culture and traditions before you go.

Seasonal Advice for Portugal

When you visit Portugal shapes the kind of experience you’ll have. Summer (June to August) brings lively festivals, warm beach weather, and bustling streets, which is perfect for those who enjoy vibrant energy, but is also the busiest season, especially in the Algarve and Lisbon.

Spring and fall are ideal for cultural explorers, offering mild weather, blooming landscapes, and fewer crowds. The autumn harvest in the Douro Valley is a must-see for wine lovers, while winter invites peaceful escapes in Lisbon, Porto, Madeira and the Azores.

Planning ahead is essential for peak events such as the Santo António and São João festivals in June, or for seasonal wine tours. For more seasonal insights, check out when to go and tailor your itinerary around what matters most to you.

Top Destinations for First-Time Travellers to Portugal

Start in Lisbon, a city that balances historic charm with modern energy. Wander Alfama’s winding lanes, visit Belém Tower, and enjoy a night of soulful fado music. Porto offers a slower pace along the Douro River, where you can pair port wine tastings with riverfront strolls. For relaxation, the Algarve is an iconic choice, boasting golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and hidden coves perfect for sunseekers and nature lovers.

Add a day trip to Sintra to see whimsical palaces like Pena Palace, surrounded by misty forests. If time allows, include Madeira, a subtropical paradise with lush gardens, scenic levada walks, and mild year-round weather.

Culture and Customs in Portugal

Portugal values courtesy and calmness in public spaces. When visiting churches or rural villages, modest dress is appreciated as a sign of respect for local mores. Greetings are warm but simple: handshakes in formal situations and cheek kisses among friends or acquaintances. A few polite words like “por favor” for please and “obrigado” or “obrigada” for thank you go a long way in making connections with locals.

Public behaviour tends to be quiet and respectful, particularly on public transportation and in religious settings. Travellers will find the culture welcoming, but showing sensitivity to local traditions enhances every interaction.

Food and Dining in Portugal

Portugal’s culinary scene is diverse, but seafood is central to many dishes, especially along the coast. If you have allergies, it’s important to communicate this clearly when dining. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are widely available in cities like Lisbon and Porto, with vegan and halal choices increasingly common in urban areas and tourist regions.

In rural destinations, menus lean toward traditional fare, so flexibility helps. Supermarkets often feature multilingual food labeling, making it easier to identify ingredients. The best time to visit Portugal is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant, and the tourist crowds are smaller, compared to the peak summer months. These periods offer mild temperatures ideal for exploring cities and the countryside.

Portugal is rich in cultural experiences. Don't miss a live Fado music performance, an intangible cultural heritage found primarily in Lisbon and Porto. Experience the pilgrimages of the holy city of Fatima or head to the island of Madeira to take in the Madeira Flower Festival or see the fireworks on New Year's Eve. Also, consider visiting during the Festival of St. John (Festa de São João) in Porto in June for a vibrant celebration with fireworks, music, and dancing. Exploring the historic centres of cities like Évora and Sintra is also highly recommended.

I was looking at a month holiday in New Zealand and Australia and Natasa Jaric who is located in the Toronto area helped to make it happened by combining 2 already designed holidays in Oceania. From the beginning to the end, Natasa was "hands on" by explaining and providing everything I needed for our trip. During our trip, there were few bumps on the road that had nothing to do with Goway Travel as it was the airline company that cancelled our scheduled flight and created chaos. And the other problems (they were light) was because of the way hotels described their rooms. It should definitely be better worded! Db to me means double bed ... what does it mean to you? ;-) Anyhow, we ended up having two beds but with some arguments at one hotel only. The others accommodated us at no extra cost. I should also add that NZ and Aus. know how to treat tourists. I was particularly impressed with the transfers services offered by different companies both in NZ and Aus. Wow! No waiting at the airports, hotels or terminals. They were there ready to pick us up and drive us where ever we needed to be! Well done!!! It's the kind of service that I will have a hard time not to use again as it comes with a $ sign but definitely worth spending it! :-). I received a very good response from the "Help office" when the flight was cancelled and other inquiries I had made. Very good service once again. I live quite a few experiences during that month and all thanks need to go to Natasa and her team. So Natasa: Thank you very very much for a very well organized travel! Carole Ouellet

Ingrid did a phenomenal job creating a 22 day trip beginning in with 3 days in Turkey, that included a Turkish Bath and a private tour of the mosques, we then took a 10 day cruise through the Mediterranean, Greece, Croatia, plus a couple of other stops. We got off the cruise in Ravenna Italy our transportation was spot on picking us up (I would have to stay all of our transportation was impressive, always there, on time, very helpful) we traveled from Ravenna to Venice where we stayed for two nights. Venice is the only place we had a hiccup, we weren't sure if someone was meeting us at our Hotel to take us to the water taxi to get to the train station, we figured it out, made the train and all was good. Traveled to Florence, had the best time there with one of our most favorite excusions, stayed in Florence for two nights and then completed our trip with three nights in Rome. Rome is BUSY, I was not prepared for that but should of expected it. This is our second big trip planning through Goway Travel, I can not recommend enough, they are so detailed and take care of everything you need and everything you didn't know you needed. Our 2-week trip to Normandy, Switzerland and Italy after we disembarked from the Queen Mary 2 in Southampton in mid-May was superb. Michael Keon did an amazing job of putting together highlights for us to see and visit with the short time we had. All the train reservations, private and small group tours and transportations were very well coordinated, on time, and usually exceeded our expectations. Drivers were courteous and knowledgeable. Mike did a wonderful job getting everything coordinated, in spite of our almost “last minute” booking. I booked a month-long trip through GOWAY back in 1989 for Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, and they were superb then. So I tried them again, and found the entire organization to be even better. Mike was quick to respond to any questions that came up regarding booksings and times, regardless of the 6-hour time difference. Just superb! Although we had a nasty experience in Milan, GOWAY was very responsive and saw to our requests and our needs. Again, Michael Keon is the person who coordinated our travel. I will ask for Mike when I travel again with GOWAY. I recommend GOWAY highly. PJ Wheeler
