Social Conventions
It is important to remember to dress modestly and to remove shoes when visiting mosques or religious sites. When offering something to an Egyptian, they will most likely refuse at first, this is customary and visitors should follow suit. Shaking hands is the normal greeting in Egypt. Also, before taking photographs, permission should always be asked.
Islamic religion is very important to many parts of Egyptian life and Muslims are required to pray five times a day. Ramadan is a holy month involving fasting (eating, drinking etc). Although non-Muslims are not required to participate, Ramadan should be respected and it is considered rude to indulge in these activities in public.
Language
Arabic is the official language of Egypt, however, English and French are also widely spoken. Other languages found in different parts of the country include German, Italian and Spanish.
Religion
Islam is the official religion of Egypt with approximately 90% of the population being Muslim. Most non-Muslims in Egypt are Christian and belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church. There is also a small Jewish minority.
