Insider Travel Tips

Located at the crossroads of Africa and the Middle East, Egypt blends ancient history with vibrant modern culture. From the Pyramids of Giza to the temples of Luxor and the shores of the Red Sea, the country offers a journey through time unlike anywhere else.

Understanding a few key details before you travel will ensure a seamless and enriching experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in Egypt’s remarkable contrasts.

“Egypt is a modern and cosmopolitan country with a culture of hospitality,” says Destination Specialist Elise Umulisa. “It is also very green, not just a desert.”

Practical Information for Visiting Egypt

Many travellers require a visa, which can typically be obtained online or on arrival. Requirements vary by nationality, so it’s important to check in advance.

Credit cards are widely accepted in major cities, hotels, and larger restaurants, while cash is preferred in smaller towns, markets, and for tipping. Carry small denominations in Egyptian pounds or U.S. dollars for convenience.

While tap water is generally safe for locals, bottled or filtered water is recommended for visitors.

Safety and Etiquette in Egypt

Egypt is known for its warm hospitality, and most tourist areas are safe, particularly when travelling with experienced guides.

As with any destination, remain aware of your surroundings and secure valuables when in busy areas. Modest dress is expected when visiting mosques, churches, and cultural sites. Shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering religious buildings.

Respectful behaviour, including polite greetings and observing local customs, enhances the travel experience.

Culture and Customs in Egypt

Egyptian culture is rooted in strong traditions of family, hospitality, and community. Visitors are often welcomed warmly, with tea or coffee offered as a gesture of goodwill.

Conversations are lively and expressive, and bargaining is a common and accepted part of shopping in markets. Public displays of affection are generally avoided, particularly in more traditional areas.

Learning a few simple Arabic greetings, such as “salaam alaikum,” is appreciated and helps foster positive interactions.

Seasonal Advice for Egypt

The best time to visit Egypt is from October to April, when temperatures are cooler and ideal for exploring historical sites.

Summer months can be very hot, particularly in Upper Egypt, though this is also when attractions are quieter. The Red Sea offers excellent year-round conditions for beach stays and diving.

Travelling during Ramadan or local festivals provides unique cultural experiences but may affect opening hours and daily schedules.

Must-Sees for First-Time Travellers to Egypt

First-time visitors should focus on Egypt’s iconic highlights. In Cairo, stand before the awe-inspiring Pyramids of Giza and explore the historic Egyptian Museum, home to an extensive collection of ancient artifacts that offer a fascinating introduction to Egypt’s past.

No visit to Egypt is complete without experiencing the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. Located near the pyramids, this state-of-the-art museum showcases Egypt’s history on an unprecedented scale, including the full Tutankhamun collection displayed together for the first time.

Luxor offers extraordinary ancient sites, including the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, and Luxor Temple, while Aswan provides a more relaxed pace with visits to Philae Temple and scenic Nile views.

For a truly unforgettable experience, consider visiting the Abu Simbel Temples, where the colossal statues of Ramses II guard one of Egypt’s most impressive and remote archaeological sites. Whether reached by air or as an early morning excursion from Aswan, it is a powerful and rewarding addition to any itinerary.

A Nile River cruise is one of the most rewarding ways to connect these destinations, combining comfort with expert-guided exploration along the river.

Food and Dining in Egypt

Egyptian cuisine is flavourful and rooted in fresh, local ingredients. Popular dishes include koshari, falafel, and ful medames, alongside grilled meats and seasonal vegetables. “The fruit and flower juices are also very memorable,” says  Destination Specialist Elise Umulisa.

Dining is often relaxed and social, with meals served later in the evening. Guests are typically offered generous portions, and it is polite to accept at least a small amount.

Eating with the right hand in traditional settings is customary, and tipping is widely expected for good service.

I can't tell you enough how much I love to work with Callie. She is a life saver and I love how attentive she is. Every time I give her an itinerary for a client- she really knocks it out of the park with the proposal. If there are any issues- she is on it right away. Her work ethic is outstanding.Michelle Labarca

We were trying to navigate Swiss Travel Center to book a 10 day train trip through Switzerland. It was exactly what we wanted but navigating their site was extremely difficult for us. Goway Travel picked up on our plight and put us in contact with Jacqueline Fagooli, one of their agents. From there on everything was so smooth. Their efficiency, communication, and thoroughness were beyond our expectations. The trip was fabulous and kudos to Jacqueline and Goway for their help in making it so.Carolyn McCormack

The destination specialist I've worked with (Kim Rawlings) has provided exceptional service. She is very knowledgeable of her region and everything they have to offer. She is very prompt in her communication and follow-up. She listens and is very attentive to my client's needs and wants. Kim's personality makes one feel like they've known each other for years. If GoWay had a customer service model, Kim is it.T. Jackson, Tribe Trek Travel

I just returned from escorting 34 people to China with four stops. We had hotels, local guides and extensive daily sightseeing. We had flights and we had high speed rail. There were numerous components that could have gone wrong but did not. I would like to highly recommend local guide Yoyo in Shanghai as well as Kevin in Xian. Two of the best guides I have ever had anywhere in the world. Suzette Castro and her team at the Goway Group Department did an excellent job helping me put this together. I was demanding, they were totally cooperative. It went well. I will be back. Amy Fink, CTC at Blue Ribbon Travel ArrangementsAmy in San Bruno, CA
