How long can your Egyptian adventure last? Discover visa options!

How long can you vacation in Egypt?

Tourists with single-entry visas issued by the Egyptian government can stay in the country for up to 30 days; these visas are valid for six months. Multiple-entry visas are also valid for six months and allow a collective stay of up to 90 days. Depending on where a visitor is from, visas may be obtained through Egypt’s embassies and consulates, online or on arrival at major Egyptian airports. All foreigners must hold passports that are valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in the country.

What currency does Egypt use?

Egypt’s official currency is the Egyptian pound, which trades at around 49 pounds to $1 USD. American dollars are accepted in some larger hotels or tourist spots, but this should not be relied on. On the whole, cash is king in Egypt as many local restaurants, shops and tour operators do not have credit card facilities. However, you should be able to pay by card at most mid-range and high-end stores, restaurants and hotels; just make sure to check first.

Do I need to tip in Egypt?

Tipping is both customary and expected in Egypt, with the tip amount depending on the service provided. In restaurants, it is customary to tip between 10 and 15 percent of the total bill. For hotel staff such as housekeepers, bellhops, and doormen, a gratuity of 5 USD per service is appropriate. With tour guides, tips of 20 USD per day is the norm, depending on the length and quality of the tour. Even the simplest tasks, such as giving directions or posing for a photograph, are rewarded with small tips, so it’s a good idea to carry small bills wherever you may go.

Is Egypt LGBTQ+ friendly?

Although queer people in Egypt have no legal protections from discrimination and many facets of LGBTQ+ culture are suppressed, it is generally safe for LGBTQ+ travellers to visit the country as long as caution and discretion are exercised. Given Egypt’s conservative Islamic character, dressing in a modest fashion and refraining from public displays of affection of any kind are advisable for all individuals and couples, including queer ones. For maximum safety, it is also recommended that LGBTQ+ visitors avoid using queer dating apps while in the country. Non-binary and transgender individuals may find it trickier to navigate a society that conforms to strict gender roles (even though men In Egypt commonly hold hands, link arms and greet each other with kisses on the cheek). Using an affirming tour guide and/or travelling with a group can add extra layers of protection for queer travellers while also facilitating casual encounters with Egyptians, who are on the whole welcoming and eager to show off their country.

How much is a trip to Egypt?

Egypt is not an expensive country to travel in yet offers tremendous experiential value. With a budget ranging from $1,500 to $3,000 USD, a first-time visitor can experience the essence of the country, from the bustle of Cairo and grandeur of the Pyramids to the haunting beauty of the Nile and other Pharaonic sites. In general, a budget traveller can expect to spend around $30 to $50 per day in Egypt, while a mid-range traveller can expect to spend around $50 to $100 a day.

What to pack for a trip to Egypt?

Given that most trips to Egypt involve shuttling between cities and sites via bus, boat or plane, it’s advisable to keep to a single suitcase and to pack lightly. Travel wear should be lightweight, breathable and easily layered to accommodate both cool interiors and extreme outdoor heat. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as are hats and scarves for both protection from the sun and for entering religious sites. Pack a swimsuit if you’re going to a beach resort or visiting a hammam.

Do many Egyptians speak English?

Most educated Egyptians are fluent in English or French or both, as are most hospitality workers. Foreign languages are less common outside of major centres, so it’s a good idea to learn a few phrases in Arabic such as hello (salamun alaykum with strangers and marhaba or ahlan among friends), please (law samaht) and thank you (shokran).

Can I drink the tap water in Egypt?

It isn’t advisable to drink tap water in Egypt. Instead, drink bottled water or fill your own reusable bottle (ideally one with a filter) from a reliable water source.

What’s the best way to get around in Egypt?

From Cairo’s bustling roadways to more remote parts, it’s best to let locals do the driving in Egypt, whether it’s a metered cab in the capital (make sure the meter is working before setting off), a private driver or a prearranged tour. Flying is the easiest and fastest way to travel longer distances, with several departures per day connecting Cairo with a host of popular domestic destinations. Every trip to Egypt should also involve a cruise on the Nile—options range from one of a few hours on a traditional dahabiya or a days-long luxury excursion on a modern river liner from Cairo to Luxor, the Valley of the Kings and more.

I cannot sing Erin’s praises enough! She planned an action-packed two-week New Zealand itinerary that hit every single stop on our bucket list. Every experience was truly first-class and luxurious. While I found myself being price-conscious initially, once I saw the incredible quality of the experiences she curated, I knew it was going to be the trip of a lifetime. A huge thank you to Erin and Go Way Travel for making my 50th birthday so epic. We’ll definitely be reaching out for our next big adventure!Michelle

I booked this trip to Adelaide with Goway, after using them before when we explored the 'big' sites of Australia. This time, we went to Adelaide to go to three of the top wine growing areas for wine tastings. We were a small group of 4 people. It was made better as the vendor used Small Batch Wine Tours for all of our excursions. They were fantastic making us the only travelers on these tours. Matthew, the owner, even adjusted our wineries on the last day to go to different place. This place totally marked off everything we were looking for in wine. Ended up buying a couple of bottles. Between Goway setting it up and Small Batch Wine Tours running the actual tours we had a beautiful and seamless trip. not applicable

Land Package booked was for Bora Bora. The Goway Agent priced out 3 different resorts in the same area. Before making a final decision, she even obtained the menus at the Resort so the clients could decide if they wanted to purchase the 1/2 board meal package. With extreme patience, the agent obtained answers to all of our questions. It was so nice to have this package inclusive of all taxes and resort fees and to have a local agent meet the clients upon their arrival in PPT. EMD

I had an absolutely wonderful experience working with Shalini. From the very first conversation, she was warm, welcoming, and genuinely invested in helping me plan the perfect trip. she took the time to understand what I was looking for, offered thoughtful suggestions, and shared incredibly helpful insights that only someone with deep knowledge and passion for travel could provide. What really stood out was how easy she made everything feel. Every question I had—big or small—was answered with patience and clarity. her recommendations were spot‑on, and I never felt rushed or pressured. Instead, I felt supported, informed, and excited about my plans. If you’re looking for someone who is friendly, attentive, and truly committed to creating a great travel experience, I can’t recommend Shalini highly enough. She turned what could have been a stressful process into something enjoyable and inspiring.enzo r reda

I would like to recognize the outstanding support provided by the Goway Travel team, and especially Yael, during a very challenging situation involving my customers who were stranded in Dubai. From the moment the issue arose, Yael and the team were incredibly supportive, working through multiple options to secure flights and ensure my customers could return home safely. Their persistence, professionalism, and willingness to explore every possible solution made a stressful situation much easier to manage. Throughout the process, communication was clear, timely, and reassuring. It was evident that the team was fully committed to the well-being of the traveler and to resolving the situation as quickly as possible. I truly appreciate the dedication shown by Yael and the Goway Travel team. Their actions reflect a strong commitment to customer care and partnership, and I’m very grateful for the support they provided in getting my customer home safely. Thank you Goway. Our trip to Asia was fantastic! From the beginning of registration, working with Ameet Duggal, to the actual trip, the service Goway provided was outstanding! Ameet was great to work with. He was kind, professional and answered all my questions whenever they arose. Our guides in all four locations (Hong Kong, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Siem Reap) were all exceptional. All were very well informed, spoke English very well, had a great sense of humor, were always on time, and paid attention to all the details so as to make our trip absolutely problem free and enjoyable. We were picked up at all locations at the airport, and returned there, in a punctual manner. The drivers were great, especially Bros in Siem Reap. All had lots of water for us because is was pretty hot everywhere we went. Food was wonderful and all the sites we visited were interesting and beautiful. I was especially impressed with how our guides knew how and when to navigate certain sites to avoid large crowds. They situated our visits so we would avoid the intense heat. All in all, I would definitely consider doing another independent tour with Goway. I would also recommend your services to anyone who wished to travel abroad, especially to Asia! Jamie Ferbezar

I had the pleasure of working with Erin. It was my first time booking something in Europe and let me tell you Erin made everything easy and very simple for us to follow. She booked everything for us from our plane tickets private transfers and all of our tours that we did in Ireland. She nailed it. I would definitely recommend booking with GoAway travel and if you have Erin as your travel agent she make sure everything is covered. 10 out of 10. Ness Hedge
