A Traveller's Guide to Egypt

Everything you need to know about travelling to Egypt.

Essential Facts

Currency

The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP). US dollars and Euros are also accepted in some tourist areas. While credit and debit cards are accepted in some major hotels and restaurants, cash is still preferred in Egypt, so be sure to take out cash at an ATM, which are common in shopping malls, hotels, and banks.

Language

Arabic is the official language of Egypt. Tourism professionals and many young people in the major cities also speak English, but you can never assume. Knowing a little bit of Arabic, even just “hello” and “thank you,” can go a long way in ingratiating yourself to the locals.

Best Time to Visit

The summer months are especially hot in Egypt, so the rest of the year is preferable to visit. That being said, there are things to do in Egypt across all seasons. September through April is the most popular time to visit, with the holidays of Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter also attracting large crowds.

Climate

Egypt has hot summers and mild winters. From May to August, temperatures regularly exceed 30°C/86°F, so it’s important to stay hydrated and avoid the heat of the day. September, March, and April are more pleasant, with warm temperatures but less extreme heat. The winter from October through February is cooler in the evenings, but still warm in the south. Rain is not common in Egypt.

Ideal Traveller

While Egypt is one of the world’s go-to bucket list destinations, it’s especially appealing to history buffs, who can explore the pyramids and other wonders of the ancient world. The country also has appealing beach resorts and celebrated restaurants, so culture lovers and travellers wanting a warm vacation will also find a lot to like.

Getting There From North America

Major Airports

Cairo International Airport is the busiest airport in the country, serving as a hub for the Middle East. It’s located around 15km/9mi outside of town, although heavy traffic can make it seem further from the city than it is.

Major Air Routes from the United States

New York offers non-stop flights to Cairo. Other major cities often connect through New York or a major European gateway city.

Major Air Routes from Canada

There are seasonal direct flights from Canada to Egypt. Most flights connect through New York or a European gateway city such as London.

Essential Sights of Egypt

Great Sphinx

Cairo

Cairo is Egypt’s capital and the largest city in the Middle East. The city is famous for its bustling marketplaces, medieval palaces, and stunning relics of Ancient Egypt, including the pyramids of Giza. Tahrir Square is the heart of the city and where you’ll find the Egyptian Museum as well as some of the most celebrated hotels. Medieval Cairo has several Islamic wonders from the Middle Ages, including the Citadel of Cairo, but the city’s greatest attraction is Giza, home to the Great Pyramid as well as the Sphinx.

Luxor

This city on the Nile is a common start or end point to a river cruise. It’s located on the site of ancient Thebes, which was the capital of Ancient Egypt for 500 years. Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple are among the best-preserved temples in the nation. Just outside the city to the north lies the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, where the tombs of ancient rulers are found, including that of Tutankhamun.

Aswan

The other embarkation point for a cruise along the Nile, Aswan is an important river port and tourist centre. The Philae Temple Complex is one of the nation’s most significant temple sites. Aswan is also the gateway to the Aswan High Dam, which dramatically changed the flow of the Nile.

Abu Simbel

This southern village just across the border with Sudan is the site of the ancient temples of Abu Simbel, which are known for their massive statues of Ramses II. The entire site was actually moved from its original location after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, which redirected the Nile and flooded the original area to make Lake Nasser.

Other Highlights of Egypt Off the Beaten Path

Sharm el Sheikh

Alexandria

This port city was home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World during the Hellenic period. Today, it’s an attractive port city far from most tourist crowds. The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a marvellous architectural attraction that keeps alive the spirit of the ancient library that was burned by the Romans. Qaitbay Citadel along the seafront is the city’s greatest remaining historical landmark, while the attractive seaside promenade and sandy beaches provide more reason to visit.

Sharm el-Sheikh

This desert resort in the Sinai Peninsula offers an attractive escape for Egyptians and European tourists with its sandy beaches, warm waters, and coral reefs. Resorts line Naama Bay, while Ras Muhammad National Park offers great scuba diving sites. The resort makes for a nice addition to a trip through ancient Egypt.

Hurghada

This coastal resort town is another favourite vacation spot for locals and tourists alike. Located along the Red Sea coastline, the town has a modern district known for its restaurants and nightclubs, while the old souks and coffee shops of El Dahar offer a taste of the past. The sandy beaches and resorts are the main appeal.

Top Activities and Experiences in Egypt

Nile River cruise

Cruise the Nile River

A river cruise between Luxor and Aswan is an essential component of a trip to Egypt. Aboard a well-equipped river vessel, travellers spent several days cruising the Nile and experiencing this important waterway that has been the centre of Egyptian life for thousands of years. Daily stops at temples and tombs provide insight into the past, while the on-board features provide all the comforts of a hotel.

Visit Khan el-Khalili in Cairo

Khan el-Khalili is the largest open air market in the Middle East and the heart of Cairo’s historic quarter. You can shop for all kinds of goods, from spices and jewelry to beautiful textiles and artisanal crafts. You may need to go with someone who can speak Arabic to ensure you barter for the best deals, but a visit is an unforgettable experience of Egyptian culture.

See the Grand Egyptian Museum

This brand-new, massive museum built near the Great Pyramid of Giza will open in the spring of 2021, providing a more spacious and state-of-the-art display of the thousands of ancient artifacts taken from temples and tombs across the nation. The museum intends to display the full exhibit of artifacts from King Tutankhamun’s tomb. The museum’s design, which recreates an inverted pyramid, is worth a visit in itself.

Essential Egyptian Foods to Try

spices in Cairo market

Ta’miya

Similar to falalefs, Egypitan ta’miya are made of fava beans that are ground and made into balls and fried. They’re served in warm pita along with vegetables such as onion and cilantro, and topped with tahina and other sauces. They’re great as a snack or lunch.

Ful Medames

This traditional breakfast dish consists of stewed fava beans that are cooked along with parsley, onions, and a variety of spices. They’re often served with eggs and are an essential part of any complete breakfast in Egypt.

Koshary

This layered dish of rice, macaroni noodles, lentils, and chickpeas is an Egyptian favourite and a common street food. The combination of starches and pulses is usually topped with caramelized onions and spicy sauces. It’s an inexpensive treat.

Mahshi

This stuffed vegetable dish usually has rice and sometimes meat stuffed into vegetables such as squash, zucchini, or bell peppers. It’s often topped with a tomato sauce and served alongside other dishes or as a main course. It’s a good option for vegetarians.

Tips for Sustainable Travel

camels near pyramids

Travelling sustainably in Egypt is more difficult than in some other countries due to the limited eco-friendly options in terms of transportation and accommodation. The best way to limit your impact on the local environment is to refrain from using disposable plastic and to opt for hotels with environmentally-friendly initiatives. It’s also important to be careful what you buy in local markets. Also, if you’re going to be booking a camel ride during your visit, be sure to book from reputable sources that don’t mistreat the animals.

Where to Go Next

Egypt is the perfect jumping off point to a longer vacation in Africa or the Middle East. You can connect onward to Israel and Jordan to continue exploring ancient history, or transfer south to pair with a safari in East Africa. Morocco and Tunisia are also nearby and offer a nice pairing for a trip through North Africa. Europe is close by as well, so you can easily connect to a major city like London or Paris.

We had an amazing trip to Southeast Asia. We would like to thank Goway for organizing a memorable vacation. The tour guides were very personable, kind, respectful and knowledgeable about their countries. It was nice to be able to ask them questions and hear about their daily lives. They went above and beyond to make our trip as enjoyable as possible. We were so glad our tours were private as the guides were very flexible in accommodating us as I often could not fully participate after spending time in a hospital with food poisoning. We enjoyed our time in Singapore. The driver who drove us from and to the airport gave us a compressive overview of daily life in Singapore. It was fascinating to hear how home ownership, retirement and driving was so different there. The accommodations were excellent, the staff were all very kind and helpful. We have to particularly commend the staff at the Siesta Classic Ma May in Hanoi. Ann at reception was so kind to my husband when I was in the hospital asking him regularly how I was doing and arranging late checkout without being asked. And Suzie our Hanoi tour guide for rearranging a tour time for my husband then dropping him off at the hospital. She also managed to take me to see the Ho Chi Minh property on our way to the airport as I had missed so much of Hanoi. I would also like to thank Aurel Vion, the Goway representative from Paris, who personally called me while I was in the hospital to enquire how I was doing, cancel our Halong cruise and arrange an extra night in the hotel for my husband. It was much appreciated. Hoang was super flexible with our tours in Hue and Hoi An as I was still very weak having just gotten out of hospital. We really enjoyed our visit to the private pottery museum and meet the owner and our ride on the Perfume River in a private boat and our voyage through the mountain pass to Danang. Andy, the tour guide who picked us up from the Boutique Hoi A Resort helped us avoid the long lineups in the Danang airport, again very appreciated. Tuan our tour guide in Saigon was also very accommodating. We really enjoyed our days with him relaxing on our private sampan to Cai Be and our trip to Can Tho to visit the floating markets. He also took us to the War Remnants Museum on the way back to Saigon as we had missed our tour of the Cu Chi tunnels because our flight in Danang was delayed 4 hours. And poor Phil in Bangkok, he tried his best with the culinary tour. Unfortunately after the food poisoning we were being very cautious in what we ate. We did appreciate his tour of Chinatown and the great meal of Pad Thai. He also provided us with excellent directions so we could take the subway, skytrain and ferry by ourselves. We will never forget how we were able to experience and appreciate cultures much different than ours. We have only good things to say about Goway and certainly always recommend the company to all we know. We have already had an acquaintance of ours book a trip with the company. And lastly we must thank Katherine Samsonkinai for arranging another excellent vacation. We will certainly continue to recommend her and will be calling her again to organize our next big trip. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Egypt. We were a small group trip with only three people. The guides and transfers from Emeco were excellent.Always on time and very knowledgeable. Our transfer went smoothly due to these guides. They were very efficient and made sure we didn’t have to wait in lines too long. The Sun Goddess was a beautiful riverboat and all of our meals were excellent. One suggestion is to include tips . We were always trying to find the right amounts for tips. Also the times for most excursions were very early in the morning….5:30 or 6:00 and that was not on our itinerary. I understand the early times to avoid the crowds. All in all we were very pleased with GoWay and would use them again in the future. Thinking of South Africa Safari. Also would like to thank our agent Elise for answering all of my questions and concerns. We felt very safe in Egypt. Sue Scarborough

As a travel agent, it was very easy to work with Goway. They were very responsive, especially Osvaldo Gonzalez, even when the client wanted to make in-destination changes a day or two prior. My clients absolutely enjoyed everything about their trip to Costa Rica - they specifically mentioned that all the drivers and guides they had were excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable. I would not hesitate to use Goway again for a custom trip to Costa Rica. Shawna Woods Roy

We, three couples, all enjoyed our time in Peru, despite the small amount of time we had, and the fact one person had injury while on the cruise prior to arriving in Lima. We did want to experience Machu Picchu without spending as many days as others usually do, since we had been traveling prior to that already. Kajal at Goway was able to tailor a well packed three-day private tour for our small group of six. Every detail, from the moment we got off the cruise ship, to Cusco, to Machu Picchu, and back to Lima airport hotel, was well taken care of. Kajal was very efficient in helping with the requested itinerary, and in staying on desired budget, as well answered all questions in timely fashion. We were able to accomplish what we were not sure if possible, all thanks to Kajal at Goway. Our experience in Peru was very positive. We felt the tours organized by Goway had enabled us to have great and impressive exposure to Peruvian culture and important historical sights - all 31 hours in 3 days!!! Condor Travel in Peru took care of us every step of the way. Every person we came across was very courteous, willing, and helpful. Help was always there and questions answered quickly via Whatsapp. All in all a great and positive experience we would highly recommend.KM

Mary G. was an absolute pleasure to work with. I partner with Goway often for Europe and typically have my go to rep, so stepping outside of that for a New Zealand itinerary had me a little unsure at first. That hesitation quickly disappeared. Mary stepped in with confidence, handled all of my moving pieces with ease, and truly understood the level of detail I needed to take care of my clients. She delivered a beautifully curated itinerary that exceeded expectations, and most importantly, my clients had an incredible experience in New Zealand. I’m so grateful to have her as a resource and look forward to working together again.Nichole Pierce

All accommodation and tours were amazing and the 24 hour help center was great and where able to call up the tour company and have them come and still pick be up when I had a mixup with the reservation. Would definitely recommend Goway to any friends and family and will definitely be using them again.Erica Wolff

I cannot sing Erin’s praises enough! She planned an action-packed two-week New Zealand itinerary that hit every single stop on our bucket list. Every experience was truly first-class and luxurious. While I found myself being price-conscious initially, once I saw the incredible quality of the experiences she curated, I knew it was going to be the trip of a lifetime. A huge thank you to Erin and Go Way Travel for making my 50th birthday so epic. We’ll definitely be reaching out for our next big adventure!Michelle
