Insider Travel Tips

France is a destination where sophistication and style meet simplicity and authenticity. Its unmatched combination of world-class cities, charming villages, and breathtaking natural landscapes have made it endlessly appealing to travellers for centuries. Whether you’re savouring coffee in a Parisian café, exploring the lavender fields of Provence, or touring historic châteaux in the Loire Valley, the country’s delights won’t fail to impress, especially when arranged with a little judicious prep work.

“Clients can visit many areas of France easily by train,” says Destination Specialist Teresa Dahl. “Paris to Bayeux for the D-Day beaches or Paris to Avignon for scenic southern landscapes takes only a few hours.”

Efficient transportation and excellent infrastructure make exploring the Republic easy, whether by rail, car, or river cruise. The attractions they take to you, from world-renowned wineries to the Cote d’Azur, are the stuff of dreams.

Practical Information for France

Visitors from North America and the United Kingdom do not require a visa for stays under 90 days in the Schengen zone, of which France is a member. The official currency in France is the euro. Credit cards are widely accepted in its cities, though it’s wise to carry some cash for rural areas, markets, and small cafés.

Tap water is safe to drink throughout France, but bottled water is common in countryside restaurants. Electrical current is 230V with Type C and F plugs, so bring a suitable adapter.

“Pack light, especially if you’re taking trains,” advises Destination Specialist Teresa Dahl. “High-speed trains often have two levels, and you’ll need to carry and store your luggage on racks.”

Safety and Respect in France

France is warm and welcoming, offering travellers a sense of comfort and ease. As you would elsewhere in Europe, however, take basic precautions in crowded areas such as Paris’s metro, major train stations, and popular tourist spots. Keep valuables secure and avoid leaving bags unattended.

Beyond safety, respect for local customs enhances your experience. Dress modestly when entering cathedrals or sacred sites, covering shoulders and knees as a sign of courtesy.

“Paris is best explored on foot,” says Destination Specialist Teresa Dahl. “Wander beyond the core and into local neighbourhoods for an authentic experience.”

Greeting locals with a simple “bonjour” before asking a question is an important gesture, preferable to and appreciated more than speaking English right away.

While urban centres offer a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere, rural areas tend to be more traditional, so politeness and cultural sensitivity go a long way there. Embrace the slower pace of the countryside, enjoy café culture, and engage respectfully with traditions for a truly rewarding journey.

Culture and Customs in France

France is a country where manners and cultural awareness matter. Greetings are important: Always start with a polite “bonjour” when entering shops, cafés, or starting conversations. Formality is appreciated at first, so use titles like “Monsieur” or “Madame.” Cheek kisses are common among friends, but a handshake is standard in formal settings and among strangers. Dining is a social ritual, so expect meals to be leisurely. Rushing through dinner is considered impolite; savour the moment and the conversation.

“Don’t expect speedy service in France,” says Destination Specialist Teresa Dahl. “Slow dining is part of the culture, so relax and enjoy the experience.”

Café culture, too, is central to daily life. More than just coffee, cafés offer the chance to observe fellow citizens and engage with the community.

When visiting churches or historic sites such as war memorials, modest dress is a sign of respect. Don’t talk overly loudly or make excessive noise.

Seasonal Advice for Advice

Timing is everything in France. Summer (June to August) brings lively festivals, sunny beaches, and bustling cities, but also the biggest crowds.

Spring and fall are ideal for sightseeing, with milder weather and fewer tourists. “Early fall is the perfect time to visit,” says Destination Specialist Alex Colici. “The weather is still great, and the crowds are smaller.”

For wine enthusiasts, autumn is harvest season in Bordeaux and Burgundy, while winter transforms the Alps into a skier’s paradise and cities into festive wonderlands with Christmas markets.

Major events like Bastille Day in July or the Cannes Film Festival in May add cultural flair but require advance booking. For more insights on choosing the best season for you, explore our guide to When to Visit France.

Must-Sees for First-Time Travellers to France

For first-time visitors, France offers a blend of iconic sights and authentic experiences. Paris is a must for its world-famous landmarks, romantic river views, and artistic treasures. In addition to taking in the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, wander Le Marais or Montmartre for local charm.

Provence entices with lavender fields, vineyards, and charming villages perfect for scenic drives and leisurely meals, while the French Riviera promises glamour and sunshine, from Nice’s Promenade des Anglais to the chic streets of Cannes and St. Tropez.

For history lovers, Normandy’s D-Day beaches and stunning Mont Saint-Michel are unforgettable. “For first-time visitors, start in Paris and take day tours,” Destination Specialist Teresa Dahl recommends. “For return trips, combine Paris with Provence and Nice.”

Food and Dining in France

Dining in France is about more than just eating; it’s an experience steeped in tradition and respect for quality. Meals often feature fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients, reflecting a deep pride in regional specialties. From crusty baguettes and artisanal cheeses to dishes like coq au vin or ratatouille, every bite tells a story.

“Lyon is the gastronomic heart of France,” says Destination Specialist Teresa Dahl. “It’s where French cuisine truly began, and the sauces there are unforgettable.”

Expect later dining hours than in North America. Lunch is typically served between 12:30 and 2:00 p.m., while dinner starts around 8:00 p.m. Rushing a meal is considered impolite. Embrace the slower pace and enjoy the art of conversation.

In French homes, hospitality is warm but formal. If invited to dinner, it’s customary to bring a small gift, like chocolates or wine. Tipping in restaurants tends to be modest, usually involving rounding up or, for exceptional service, adding five to 1o percent of the bill, known as l’addition.

We have used Goway Travel for previous trips and have been very happy with their excellent service. Our last trip to New Zealand and Australia was no exception. Our agent, Lori Mazzono, got tuned into the sort of trip we were hoping to have immediately. The various booking she provided were, without exception, exceptional and exactly what we envisioned, We really don't think we would have changed anything. tBruce Belshaw

Mary was absolutely fantastic to work with. She was incredibly responsive and quick to assist with every update and change my clients made throughout the planning process. Her expertise was invaluable, from recommending the perfect resorts to advising on the best way to travel between the islands. My clients loved every moment of their trip, especially their resort stays and overwater bungalow experiences. As this was their honeymoon, creating a seamless and memorable journey was so important, and Mary exceeded expectations. They rated their experience a 5 out of 5 and could not have been happier. Thank you, Mary, for your outstanding support and attention to detail. I truly appreciated your partnership and would not hesitate to work with you again for future South Pacific Island bookings. Elisa planned our trip. We were met at the airport by Paul who drove us to Arusha. Adam, our guide and driver was with us the whole trip and was very knowledgeable about the country and the animals & birds we encountered. We had a wonderful trip to Peru for 11 days organized by Goway. Overall the trip was great, we loved our guides throughout, some of the hotels were truly amazing and it was helpful having everything organized and having a point person to ask questions and check in while we were there. Some main highlights were: 1) Machu Picchu- I am so glad we did two tours, because the weather was perfect for views, but also had an opportunity to see Machu Picchu more in depth with a knowledgeable and friendly guide and had a little extra time in Aguas Calientes to shop, explore and even visit the butterfly garden and do some birdwatching. 2) Cusco especially the Hotel Aranwa Cusco. The hotel was incredible, excellent service, modern updates, it was a true highlight of the trip. Cusco itself was also a highlight, loved our half day tour, plus getting ideas for our guide on what else to see in our free time and where to eat. 3) Lima- Aloft Miraflores was another highlight, very modern, nice pool and the best breakfast out of the hotels we stayed in. The location in Miraflores was also perfect, as there were plenty of restaurants, cafes and attractions nearby. 4) Everyone at Condor was great, from ensuring we had all our documents, tickets and itinerary to even stepping in to get water and agua Florida when we were feeling the altitude sickness the first hours in Cusco. Most of our rides and transfers were very comfortable and made the trip run smooth through all the different locations. I have been telling my friends and family how wonderful the experience with Goway has been for our Peru adventure. Eric Paul Schatzel

We used Goway on our 32 day vacation to New Zealand and Australia. The person I worked with on planning the vacation was really helpful. The way they let you plan a vacation allows for lots of flexibility. You don't have to go with one tour the whole time. We saw a lot and they tailored it to what we were interested in. All the hotels were great and in good locations. Most of the tours were good but we would have preferred to spend a little more time exploring on our own in Sydney. The only thing we were not happy with is the customer service while we were there. Hard to get a hold of and some of the instructions were not clear/ accurate. That was a little stressful. Good value for the money. Dawn Krafft Hawkins

We travelled to Morocco for 10 days, 9 nights, booked through GoWay- they used an excellent local tour company- Cynab. GoWay booked our flights with a stopover Paris, so we did a weekend on our own with family, then transfer to Morocco. Because dates of small group tours didn't work, we booked a private tour for 2, and it wasn't much different in price from small group. Everything went smoothly from start to finish. We were picked up in Casablanca and dropped at Marrakech airport 10 days later with the same driver the whole way. He was a very good driver, always told us what time to expect him next morning and was there like clockwork. Local guides were met along the way for tours of Medinas of Fes, Marrakech and Essouria. The trip was spectacular. Saw many beautiful sites. All the hotels were great- first night at Villa Mandarine in Rabat, with orange trees in the garden, the Oz Palace in Ouarzazate and the Merzouga luxury desert camp were paticularly special. The Jaal Riad in Marrakech was a beautiful hotel and a good one to relax by the pool our last day after our busy travel days. In Fes, the Merides up on a hill was a great respite from the intensity of a day walking through the Fes Medina. NIce to sit on the terrace and watch the sun go down and the lights come up. Although the days were packed, the hotels were always an oases of calm at end of day, and because we didn't need to do any navigating, it was very relaxing. Be prepared to be shown alot of artisan shops- its interesting to see and important to contribute somewhat to the economy, but I sometimes felt a bit pressured to buy, but we ended up with a reasonable amount of souvenirs and not a big cost compared to the trip. Overall a highly memorable trip, we felt very welcome in Morocco, people are very warm and hotel staff treated us royally. We felt very safe and comfortable the whole time. As someone with IBD, I was impressed I had no tummy troubles the whole time. The driver stopped at great places for lunch, and with the private tours in the city we could tell the guide when we wanted to stop and they always suggested a great place. Food was excellent throughout. A tour arranged dinner on a roof top restaurant in Marrakech was particularly special, with a gorgeous sunset and the waiters sang! The meal in the Sahara desert camp was also particularly special. Highly recommend this tripTW
