Montenegro is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts in both cold and warm weather. And because it sees less traffic than some neighbouring nations, prices are competitive.

Budva is the country’s most popular tourist destination and boasts excellent pebble beaches along several of the nation’s 70 kilometre stretch of coastline. The beaches on the Adriatic Sea are sky blue and warm and inviting in the summer. The area is known as the ‘Riviera of Sandy Beaches’ with charming hamlets and a bunch of historic monuments like its old town, castle, churches, a Venetian Water Cistern, and museums.

Budva also features a lovely walled town on a small peninsula with narrow winding lanes, and many historic buildings like the 7th century St. John’s Church, 8th century Santa Marija of Punta Church, and 14th century Church of St. Sava with stunning frescoes. The medieval town’s fortress is known as Citedela and is 2500 years old, and well preserved. Many of its buildings are made from local grey stone.

Lake Skadar is a long snake-shaped lake, the largest in the Balkans and a hub of biodiversity. It’s a huge nesting ground for birds with 280 species including the Dalmatian pelican and the great crested grebe. The best times for birdwatching are between late spring and autumn.

The vast freshwater lake partly in Montenegro and partly in Albania was used by the Romans as a route for their network of roads and it also features several traditional fishing villages.

Durmitor National Park in the Dinaric Alps is a thickly forested natural wonder. Tara Canyon is home to the world’s second deepest gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with rich flora and fauna, and dense pine forests. The park features ice caves, 18 glacial lakes, wild boars, brown bears, wolves, the elusive wolverine, and the widest varieties of butterflies in Europe. Go for a wild white water rafting trip in the summer or experience one of several winter sports in the mild winter season.
