Transylvania is Romania's most recognizable region, famous for inspiring the legend of Dracula with its towering castles. History abounds in the area, but there are plenty of other regions worth visiting. Bucharest, Romania's glimmering capital, is a treasure trove of museums, art, and nightlife. In the northwest, the Maramureș region houses the Wooden Churches, a UNESCO site worth the trek to this rural area. Take to the mountains and painted monasteries of Bucovina, an incredible colourful and artistic area also boasting UNESCO status.
Some parts of Romania may be emptier in the winter or summer, depending on tourist patterns. This means that certain attractions like museums or historical landmarks may have limited visiting hours, or only open on weekends. Check opening hours for any attractions you're interested in before travelling there to avoid disappointment.
