Insider Travel Tips

Kenya combines iconic safari experiences with rich culture and genuine hospitality. From the plains of the Maasai Mara to the vibrant streets of Nairobi, a little local knowledge will help you make the most of your journey.

English and Swahili are both official languages, and a simple “jambo” is always warmly received. Flying between regions is common and saves time, particularly when travelling between safari areas.

Bush flights have strict luggage limits, so pack light with soft-sided bags. In cities like Nairobi and Mombasa, ride-hailing services are convenient, while longer transfers are best arranged in advance.

Avoid drinking tap water and opt for bottled or filtered water throughout your trip. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, and layers for early morning game drives.

Understanding a few key details ensures your time in Kenya is smooth, respectful, and unforgettable.

Practical Information for Visiting Kenya

Most travellers require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which must be obtained online prior to arrival and is typically valid for entry within 90 days of issuance. Travellers are advised not to apply too far in advance of their travel dates. Passports should be valid for at least six months beyond your stay. Upon arrival, visitors are usually granted entry for up to 90 days, which may be extended if required.

Cash is preferred in rural areas, while credit cards are widely accepted in Nairobi and major hotels. ATMs are available in cities, but travellers should carry smaller denominations for tipping and local purchases.

Tap water is generally safe in cities, though bottled or filtered water is recommended in more remote areas.

Safety and Etiquette in Kenya

Kenya is a welcoming destination, particularly when travelling with experienced guides. As with any destination, it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings, secure valuables, and use trusted transportation.

In safari areas, always follow your guide’s instructions. When visiting cultural or religious sites, dress modestly and respect local customs. Asking permission before taking photos and greeting people politely is always appreciated.

“You can never go wrong when you visit Kenya,” says  Destination Specialist Bijal Kana, who highlights its “warm and welcoming people, always pleasant weather, and super amazing food.”

Culture and Customs in Kenya

Kenyan culture is rooted in hospitality and community. Visitors are often welcomed with warmth and genuine curiosity, whether in cities or rural villages.

Greetings are an important part of daily life, and conversations are often friendly and unhurried. Respect for elders and strong family ties are central to Kenyan society.

With dozens of ethnic groups, Kenya offers a rich cultural diversity. Engaging in local experiences, from village visits to traditional crafts, provides meaningful insight into everyday life.

Seasonal Advice for Kenya

Kenya is a year-round destination, though timing can shape your experience.

The dry season (June to October) offers excellent wildlife viewing and coincides with the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara. This is peak season, so early planning is recommended.

From December to March, conditions are ideal for coastal stays, with warm temperatures and fewer crowds inland. April and May bring the long rains, creating lush landscapes and quieter parks.

Travellers looking for something unique can also plan around local events like the Mombasa Carnival or visit during Orthodox Easter to witness traditional celebrations. “Consistent good weather and warm hospitality make Kenya a great year-round destination,” says Destination Specialist Bijal Kana

Can't say enough good things about Goway Travel. From the very start, our travel rep, Harpreet, listened carefully to what we were hoping to see and do on our first trip to Japan. She asked great questions and then came back to us with a detailed itinerary packed with adventure and fun, and all within our travel budget. From the moment we took off from LAX, Harpreet had made sure we had every tour voucher, hotel voucher, plane ticket, train ticket, literally every detail covered. All we had to do was follow our itinerary. Also, Harpreet booked us into terrific hotels. Each one was spotlessly clean, comfortable, included a full (and delicious) breakfast and, most importantly, was centrally located to all of the activities she had planned for us. So everything was a 5 or 10-minute walk away. In three weeks' time we were able to visit six cities and so many fascinating shrines, temples, castles, imperial palaces - most of which were World Heritage sites. Harpreet also tucked in fabulous "experiences" like learning how to make sushi with a professional chef, enjoying a tea ceremony and watching graceful Geishas dance. My husband and I are seasoned travelers. But we don't speak Japanese and we really knew very little about the country. There is no way we would have been able to see and do all of the fascinating things we did in Japan if we hadn't chosen Goway Travel to be our guide. Many thanks for an unforgettable trip! Great country (Italy), great people and love the feel you get by just being you. Ingrid Aird did a great job with a pair of tours one private and one group. Organizing pickup from airport and flights. Hotel, Enterprise Hotel, after a bit of a rough start getting us into a proper room, was more than excellent.Thomas Helps

We were looking forward to a magical vacation in Greece, and Goway Travel delivered on all fronts. This is the second time that we have booked with them (the first being an incredible excursion in Thailand), and everything went along swimmingly. Only on one occasion did a tour go sideways, but our Goway specialist (Patrick) took care of it for us. When your tour involves many flights, numerous hotels, various tours, ferries, and transfers, it is nice to know that your travel specialist can handle it all. Goway (from Patrick to all the other staff involved) handled everything in such a professional manner. Thanks Goway for such an incredible experience in Greece. I look forward to another adventure in the near future!Jenny Friess

While researching suppliers for a clients Thailand honeymoon, I remembered being referred to GoWay by a longterm TA ….because they “get it right and get it done!” I had already started their training modules, so I put in a quote. Immediately, Taylor responded with a very thorough email and we decided to chat. I gave him my specifics and he again responded immediately and matched my client’s travel needs 100%. I found it comforting to speak with a country expert with the knowledge I needed. My clients booked their vacation and are very excited about their itinerary! Thank you Taylor for making this process seamless.Karla B

As a travel agent, this is not the first time I’ve chosen to work with Goway for organizing my clients’ trip, this time to Chile, and once again, the experience was outstanding from start to finish. Throughout the entire process, I could count on truly professional service from Susanna. My clients are very experienced travelers and requested a highly customized itinerary, including many unique experiences that are not typically included in standard tour programs. There were also several occasions when, on behalf of my clients, I requested changes to an already prepared itinerary. Susanna was consistently helpful, patient, understanding, and — just as importantly — incredibly kind and pleasant to work with. It was clear that she genuinely cared about creating the best possible experience for my clients. I’m also certain that much of the work she put in went well beyond standard hours and expectations. My clients returned absolutely delighted with their vacation, which is always the greatest confirmation of a job well done. Thank you, Susanna, for your dedication and exceptional support. And thank you, Goway, for another wonderful experience!Beata
