A Traveller's Guide to the Philippines

Everything you need to know about travelling to the Philippines.

Essential facts

Currency

The Philippine Peso (PHP) is the currency of the Philippines. Credit cards are accepted by major hotels and larger restaurants, while cash is preferred at small shops and businesses. ATMs are available in large cities, but not in rural areas, so plan ahead.

Language

Filipino (Tagalog) is the official language of the nation, although English is also spoken. Most Filipinos speak some English, but you shouldn’t assume that people will understand you, especially outside of the major tourist centres.

Best Time to Go

The Philippines has a warm climate year round but the best time to visit is usually between November and April. It is best to avoid typhoon season from June to October as there can be heavy rains and high winds.

Climate

The Philippines has a tropical climate with hot and humid weather. December to February is the cooler season with trade winds and May to November is the hot and humid rainy season. The hottest months are between March and May. Temperatures fluctuate between 21°C/70°F in the cool season and 32°C/90°F in the hot season.

Ideal Traveller

The Philippines is perhaps best known for its tropical islands and beaches, so will most appeal to those travellers looking for a relaxing escape. Snorkellers and divers will love seeing marine life, coral reefs, and shipwrecks. The destination also has rich culture and heritage, and is a particular delight for foodies.

Getting There From North America

Major Airports

Manila Ninoy Airport (MNL) is the main international airport in the Philippines and major gateway into the country. The airport has four terminals and is located about 7km south of Manila.

Major Air Routes from the United States

Philippine Airlines is the only airline to offer nonstop service from the United States, from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City. Several other airlines have connections in major Asian cities.

Major Air Routes from Canada

Philippine Airlines has nonstop flights from Toronto and Vancouver to Manila. Several airlines also offer stopovers in various Asian cities.

Essential Sights in the Philippines

cascading rice terraces

Boracay Island

A small island in central Philippines, Boracay, known for its resorts, beaches, and variety of water-based activities. White Beach on the west coast is the most popular tourist spot with bars and restaurants, while the east coast beach side has strong winds for water sports such as kiteboarding. There are also more secluded beaches that are accessible by boat.

Banaue Rice Terraces

These cascading rice terraces carved into the mountainside of Ifugao on north Luzon were made more than 2,000 years ago by Indigenous people of the region, working with minimal equipment. The  Banaue rice terraces are considered a national cultural treasure and one of the most beautiful sights in Asia.

Chocolate Hills

These hills in Bohol Province are called the “Chocolate Hills” because their green grass turns brown in the dry season, making them look like they’re made of chocolate. The hills are spread over 50 square kilometres, and look symmetrical in shape, making it seem like they’re manmade. However, they’re natural formations, which is even more stunning. Bohol is also home to the smallest primates in the world, the tarsier.

Cebu Island

Like other major tourist islands in the Philippines, Cebu offers beaches, turquoise waters, and a variety of water-based activities. Cebu City was also the original capital of the Philippines, so the island also offers many historical sites to explore, including colonial landmarks, museums, and temples.

Manila

Manila is the capital of the Philippines, known for its Spanish colonial history and the walled city of Intramuros. Manila also has a vibrant art scene, unique Filipino foods and dishes, and one of the oldest Chinatowns in the world. History buffs will want to visit nearby Corregidor Island, where a major World War II battle took place with American and Filipino soldiers fighting against the invading Japanese.

Other Highlights of the Philippines Off the Beaten Path

El Nido Bay

Coron Island, Palawan

This island in the Palawan Archipelago is known as a world-class wreck diving destination, where scuba divers can see the Japanese shipwrecks from World War II. The island itself is also known for its limestone karst landscapes, shallow water coral reefs, and clear freshwater lakes.

Apo Island

A small, remote volcanic island with some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling in the country. Accommodations choices are limited and services are basic, but if you are interested in fish species and coral, this is the place to go. The marine area has 650 species of fish and 400 species of coral.

Luzon Island

Close to Manila, this island is home to Taal Volcano, the smallest active volcano in the world. Inside the volcano’s caldera is a crater lake and Vulcan Point, a small island. The lake is the largest lake on an island (Volcano Island) in a lake on an island (Luzon Island) in the world!

El Nido, Palawan

El Nido comprises 45 islands and islets with karst limestone cliffs, coves, and lagoons in the Bacuit Archipelago. Travellers can go island hopping, swimming, diving, or hiking in this stunning region, which is quickly becoming a major tourist destination.

Top Activities and Experiences in the Philippines

tarsier in tree

Diving and Snorkelling

Home to hundreds of species of marine life and coral plus WWII shipwrecks, the Philippines offers divers and snorkellers an underwater paradise to explore. There are dive sites for all levels of amateurs and near all the major islands.

Go Island Hopping

With so many islands, it’s impossible to choose only one to visit. Depending on your vacation time, you might be able to visit two or more major island destinations and then travel around by ferry to explore smaller islands and lesser-visited beaches.

Visit Historical Sites

There are countless historical sites to visit across the Philippines, but Intramuros, the walled city in Manila, should be at the top of your list. This 64ha Spanish fortress was built during the colonial era and has many historic buildings and streets to explore. Make sure you wear good walking shoes!

See the Philippine Tarsiers

If you visit Bohol, include a stop at the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary, dedicated to protecting these furry, bug-eyed endangered primates that are endemic to the Philippines.

Nature and Adventure

If you are not keen on water-based activities or have had your fill of beaches, you can visit other nature sites and try adventure activities on land. Take the 70m-long zipline in Boracay, trek to Taal Volcano, or visit Hinagdanan Cave in Bohol. There is no shortage of options.

Essential Filipino Foods to Try

pork adobo

Adobo

The national food of the Philippines. A balance of vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, bay leaves, and peppercorns and sometimes fish sauce is used to marinade seafood, vegetable, and meats and then simmered slowly.

Lechon

A centerpiece of any Filipino celebration and holiday is a roasted suckling pig. The pig is stuffed with herbs and spices or just salt and pepper and cooked on a bamboo split for a few hours with constant turning. Lechon is a staple at weddings and Christmas celebrations.

Kinilaw

The ceviche of the Philippines is a raw seafood dish made most often with Spanish mackerel and yellowfin tuna. The raw fish is cured with vinegar and normally served for casual gatherings.

Tips for Sustainable Travel

El Nido Philippines

Take your own reusable plastics, such as a refillable bottle, metal straws, reusable cutlery, and a shopping bag to cut down on plastics. Use coral friendly sunblock when on beaches and going snorkelling or scuba diving. Support activities that are not harmful to animals. Reduce resource consumption by limiting water and electricity use. Also, be sure not to stray off the path in national parks or purchase illegal animal products in urban markets.

Where to Go Next

With direct flights into Manilla from North America, the Philippines are often a self-contained trip. However, there is a wide variety of airlines that offer stopovers in Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai, making it easy to extend your trip.

We just returned from an incredible 2-week trip to Brazil, and it exceeded every expectation. This was our first time using Goway, and RuthAnne absolutely knocked it out of the park. What Made It Special: Exceptional Guides - Every guide RuthAnne selected was outstanding. Our Rio guide was probably the best we've ever had anywhere in the world. Our Iguazu Falls guide was equally fantastic—knowledgeable, personable, and made the experience unforgettable. Every guide was excellent throughout our journey. Amazon Experience - The Amazon River portion was breathtaking. Incredible venue, exceptional staff, and truly memorable excursions. Perfect Planning - Every detail was thoughtfully arranged. Timing, accommodations, activities—everything flowed seamlessly. RuthAnne clearly knows Brazil inside and out and matched us with the perfect experiences for our family. We felt taken care of every step of the way. Bottom Line: We'll absolutely be using Goway again for our next adventure. Traveled as a family of four - would recommend for couples, families, or anyone seeking a hassle-free, world-class experience.Ethan Davenport

We just returned from a 2 week tour of South Africa, Zimbabwe(Victoria Falls) and Botswana, and had a fabulous time! This was the third tour I've used Goway, and as usual, it was such a positive experience! The accommodations that were booked were awesome! The hotels were luxurious, clean and the staff, all so warm and welcoming! Our travel agent, Vanessa Lloyd, did a fabulous job arranging everything, and was always available to answer my many questions! We'll be using them again, next year when we take a family trip to the Greek Islands and Turkey! They are always consistent in the quality of the hotels and experiences, and I highly recommend them for your travel needs!Fran Nitta Barnes

We are still on our journey in Italy. At Capri now and heading to the Amalfi Coast. So far, we can’t thank Goway enough for putting our itinerary together so quickly. Everything is going well and hope the next 10 days are perfect too. Gladys Vivian

Can't say enough good things about Goway Travel. From the very start, our travel rep, Harpreet, listened carefully to what we were hoping to see and do on our first trip to Japan. She asked great questions and then came back to us with a detailed itinerary packed with adventure and fun, and all within our travel budget. From the moment we took off from LAX, Harpreet had made sure we had every tour voucher, hotel voucher, plane ticket, train ticket, literally every detail covered. All we had to do was follow our itinerary. Also, Harpreet booked us into terrific hotels. Each one was spotlessly clean, comfortable, included a full (and delicious) breakfast and, most importantly, was centrally located to all of the activities she had planned for us. So everything was a 5 or 10-minute walk away. In three weeks' time we were able to visit six cities and so many fascinating shrines, temples, castles, imperial palaces - most of which were World Heritage sites. Harpreet also tucked in fabulous "experiences" like learning how to make sushi with a professional chef, enjoying a tea ceremony and watching graceful Geishas dance. My husband and I are seasoned travelers. But we don't speak Japanese and we really knew very little about the country. There is no way we would have been able to see and do all of the fascinating things we did in Japan if we hadn't chosen Goway Travel to be our guide. Many thanks for an unforgettable trip! Great country (Italy), great people and love the feel you get by just being you. Ingrid Aird did a great job with a pair of tours one private and one group. Organizing pickup from airport and flights. Hotel, Enterprise Hotel, after a bit of a rough start getting us into a proper room, was more than excellent.Thomas Helps

We were looking forward to a magical vacation in Greece, and Goway Travel delivered on all fronts. This is the second time that we have booked with them (the first being an incredible excursion in Thailand), and everything went along swimmingly. Only on one occasion did a tour go sideways, but our Goway specialist (Patrick) took care of it for us. When your tour involves many flights, numerous hotels, various tours, ferries, and transfers, it is nice to know that your travel specialist can handle it all. Goway (from Patrick to all the other staff involved) handled everything in such a professional manner. Thanks Goway for such an incredible experience in Greece. I look forward to another adventure in the near future!Jenny Friess

While researching suppliers for a clients Thailand honeymoon, I remembered being referred to GoWay by a longterm TA ….because they “get it right and get it done!” I had already started their training modules, so I put in a quote. Immediately, Taylor responded with a very thorough email and we decided to chat. I gave him my specifics and he again responded immediately and matched my client’s travel needs 100%. I found it comforting to speak with a country expert with the knowledge I needed. My clients booked their vacation and are very excited about their itinerary! Thank you Taylor for making this process seamless.Karla B
