Best Time to Visit

Experience Iceland's unpredictable weather and magic in every season.

Iceland does have something to offer in each season, though Icelandic weather is unpredictable year-round, changing unexpectedly and fast. Waterfalls and rainbows are common sights, but rainfall, snowfall, or extreme winds are frequent.

If you are hoping to catch the sky dance during the Northern Lights aurora, activity happens throughout the year but is difficult to observe during the summer. September to April is a popular time for Northern Lights tours. The best places to see the mesmerizing lights include the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Grótta Lighthouse, and Thingvellir National Park

When is the ideal time to visit Iceland?

Consider visiting Iceland during shoulder season, between mid-May to mid-June and September through mid-October. The weather is good, tourists are fewer, and prices for accommodation are less expensive. Conditions for hiking remain favourable, while September through mid-October the fall foliage adds even more beauty. Also in October is the Reykjavik Food and Fun Festival, a chance to experience top chefs from around the world cooking traditional Icelandic cuisine. The famed Golden Circle drive route is still busy with all amenities open, but does not receive large numbers of summer tourists.

When is Iceland's peak tourist season?

With long sunny days and mild temperatures, summer is the peak traveller season in Iceland. The midnight sun is out in all its glory, with up to 24 hours of sunlight to be expected. All the attractions are open, and it is an ideal time for hiking, camping, whale, and puffin watching. That said, flights and accommodation tend to run at their highest in price during the summer. If you love exploring outside, and hope to travel to each of Iceland’s corners, summer is the time to visit.

Which is the most affordable time to visit Iceland?

In the winter, Iceland gets a few hours of sunlight. The long twilight before sunlight and sunset, and the sunsets are a sight to behold. Christmas to New Year is pretty packed with tourists. It's calmer in early December and January/February, and a more peaceful time to enjoy the winter scenery and Northern Lights. Flights and accommodation are more reasonably priced, though not all parts of Iceland are accessible by car during the winter as some roads are shut down due to winter conditions. Despite the chill, winter in Iceland is a magical experience.

How long should I plan to visit Iceland?

If you are looking for a short getaway, the highlights of Iceland can be managed in a 5 day trip. You will be able to spend time exploring the capital city of Reykjavik, visit the South Coast and complete the famed Golden Circle drive.

Doing a full trip around Iceland will require a 10 day itinerary, but you may also get to experience a visit to the magical Snaefellsjokull National Park, where the glacier itself covers a dormant volcano that last erupted in 250 AD. Also experience the iconic Godafoss waterfall, sitting between Lake Myvatn and Lake Akureyri.

We are still on our journey in Italy. At Capri now and heading to the Amalfi Coast. So far, we can’t thank Goway enough for putting our itinerary together so quickly. Everything is going well and hope the next 10 days are perfect too. Gladys Vivian

Can't say enough good things about Goway Travel. From the very start, our travel rep, Harpreet, listened carefully to what we were hoping to see and do on our first trip to Japan. She asked great questions and then came back to us with a detailed itinerary packed with adventure and fun, and all within our travel budget. From the moment we took off from LAX, Harpreet had made sure we had every tour voucher, hotel voucher, plane ticket, train ticket, literally every detail covered. All we had to do was follow our itinerary. Also, Harpreet booked us into terrific hotels. Each one was spotlessly clean, comfortable, included a full (and delicious) breakfast and, most importantly, was centrally located to all of the activities she had planned for us. So everything was a 5 or 10-minute walk away. In three weeks' time we were able to visit six cities and so many fascinating shrines, temples, castles, imperial palaces - most of which were World Heritage sites. Harpreet also tucked in fabulous "experiences" like learning how to make sushi with a professional chef, enjoying a tea ceremony and watching graceful Geishas dance. My husband and I are seasoned travelers. But we don't speak Japanese and we really knew very little about the country. There is no way we would have been able to see and do all of the fascinating things we did in Japan if we hadn't chosen Goway Travel to be our guide. Many thanks for an unforgettable trip! Great country (Italy), great people and love the feel you get by just being you. Ingrid Aird did a great job with a pair of tours one private and one group. Organizing pickup from airport and flights. Hotel, Enterprise Hotel, after a bit of a rough start getting us into a proper room, was more than excellent.Thomas Helps

We were looking forward to a magical vacation in Greece, and Goway Travel delivered on all fronts. This is the second time that we have booked with them (the first being an incredible excursion in Thailand), and everything went along swimmingly. Only on one occasion did a tour go sideways, but our Goway specialist (Patrick) took care of it for us. When your tour involves many flights, numerous hotels, various tours, ferries, and transfers, it is nice to know that your travel specialist can handle it all. Goway (from Patrick to all the other staff involved) handled everything in such a professional manner. Thanks Goway for such an incredible experience in Greece. I look forward to another adventure in the near future!Jenny Friess

We recently returned from France - three cities in two weeks - and our trip was fantastic! Jacqueline helped us with a return to France with no worries and concerns. Drivers met us at every destination- hotels were superb and the individual tours memorable. This is a return vacation with Goway and we could not be more pleased. The customer service is top notch and all questions answered promptly. For us seniors, we appreciate all the thoughtfulness and consideration.ElizaGray

While researching suppliers for a clients Thailand honeymoon, I remembered being referred to GoWay by a longterm TA ….because they “get it right and get it done!” I had already started their training modules, so I put in a quote. Immediately, Taylor responded with a very thorough email and we decided to chat. I gave him my specifics and he again responded immediately and matched my client’s travel needs 100%. I found it comforting to speak with a country expert with the knowledge I needed. My clients booked their vacation and are very excited about their itinerary! Thank you Taylor for making this process seamless.Karla B

Our rep at GoWay, Kimberly, was fantastic from start to finish. She came up with the exact itinerary we wanted for Melbourne, Uluru, Cairns and Sydney, and assisted us with both international and domestic flights to help us get the best rates. Once we were on the trip, everything flowed seamlessly and every tour and transport was on time.Lisa Wildes
