Best Time to Visit

Discover the perfect time to explore Spain’s diverse landscapes.

Spain’s charm shines in every season, each offering its own character and experiences. Summer (June to August) brings lively festivals and sun-soaked beaches, spring (March to May) transforms gardens and cities with blooms, fall (September to November) celebrates harvest and culture, and winter (December to February) offers peaceful city breaks and festive markets.

The shoulder seasons of “spring and early fall are the best times to visit Spain for pleasant weather and fewer crowds,” says Destination Specialist Marielle Mantele.

Whether you’re looking to wander historic streets, sip wine under the sun, or experience Spain’s vibrant traditions, the right timing can make your trip unforgettable. Talk to one of our Destination Specialists today about when to go based on your interests.

Planning Travel Around Spain’s Seasons

Spring (March to May) is one of the most beautiful times to visit Spain, with mild weather and fewer crowds. Parks and gardens bloom across Madrid and Barcelona, and Easter celebrations bring colour and pageantry to Andalusia.

Summer (June to August) is peak season along the coasts and islands, with lively festivals like La Tomatina and San Fermín. Beaches in the Balearic and Canary Islands are at their best, while cities hum with energy, but prepare for heat in the south. Be cautious because this time is also peak season for European and British tourists

Warm seas, cultural festivals, and the annual grape harvest make fall (September to November) ideal for wine lovers. It’s also the perfect time for walking tours and exploring rural landscapes under golden autumn light.

In winter (December to February), cities like Madrid and Barcelona are vibrant with art, shopping, and cozy cafés. Southern Spain and the Canary Islands offer sunny escapes with milder temperatures, perfect for avoiding harsh winter weather.

The Best Times to Visit Spain According to Your Interests

Coastal Regions

May to October is perfect for beach getaways, especially in Andalusia, the Balearics, and the Canary Islands. “Grand Canaria is ideal for winter escapes,” says Destination Specialist Farooq Qaisar.. “With temperatures around 24 degrees Celsius in the south, it’s perfect for hiking and enjoying mild, sunny days year-round.”

History and Culture

March to June and September to November offer the most comfortable weather for city tours and for exploring UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Alhambra or the rich architecture of Barcelona.

Food and Wine

Autumn is the best time for culinary travelers looking to sample Spain's extraordinary food and wine. The grape harvest in Rioja, olive season in Andalusia, and vibrant food festivals throughout the country are just a few of the options available to avid foodies. “Spain is a feast for the senses, the food is incredible, and the historic sites are absolutely captivating,” says Destination Specialist Marielle Mantele.

Regional Highlights to Plan Your Spain Trip Around

Spain’s regions each offer their own seasonal charm, so planning around the weather can define your trip. Madrid enjoys year-round appeal with cultural attractions, world-class museums, and lively squares, but spring and fall bring the most pleasant conditions for walking tours. Barcelona is at its best in May and September, when you can enjoy warm, sunny days without the peak summer crowds. Andalusia shines in spring, when mild temperatures make exploring Seville, Granada, and Córdoba a delight before the summer heat sets in. Summer in Andalusia is hot but festive, with flamenco shows and local fairs creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

Let the Seasons Shape Your Spanish Journey

Spain’s diverse climate means your itinerary can shift with the seasons. Spring is perfect for cultural deep dives in Madrid, Seville, and Granada, as well as flower festivals and Easter celebrations throughout Andalusia

Summer brings vibrant coastal escapes, ideal for the Balearic Islands and Costa del Sol, while fall is wine season in Rioja and a time to enjoy art and architecture tours without summer crowds.

Winter is surprisingly appealing for city breaks. Madrid and Barcelona offer world-class museums and festive Christmas markets, while the Canary Islands provide warm-weather retreats year-round.

“Spain is a land of incredible diversity,” says Destination Specialist Farooq Qaisar. “Each region has its own language and traditions.” For more practical advice on when and where to go, see our essential Spain travel tips.

Frequently Asked Questions

May and September are ideal months to visit Spain. These shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and vibrant cultural events, making them perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

It depends on your interests. Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are perfect for cultural tours and wine experiences, while summer (June to August) is great for beach vacations and festivals. Winter is best for city breaks and Canary Island escapes.

May and October strike the perfect balance: warm, sunny days without the intense summer heat. These months are especially great for exploring cities like Seville, Madrid, and Barcelona. As with all European countries, there is still the chance of experiencing a shower or two.

Temperatures vary by region. In summer, southern Spain can reach 40 degrees Celsius, while northern regions stay around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Winter brings mild conditions to the south (10 to 15 degrees Celsius) but cooler temperatures to Madrid and the interior (often near five to 10 degrees Celsius).

The Canary Islands have Spain’s most consistent weather year-round, averaging 20–24°C, making them a perfect winter sun destination.

July is typically the driest month across most of Spain, especially in southern regions such as Andalusia.

The peak tourist season in Spain is June through August, with the busiest month being August. This period features warm weather and is ideal for beach vacations, but it also means higher prices and larger crowds at popular destinations.

May and September are best for Barcelona, where the city’s warm weather, outdoor dining, and cultural events can be enjoyed without the heavy summer crowds.

We were trying to navigate Swiss Travel Center to book a 10 day train trip through Switzerland. It was exactly what we wanted but navigating their site was extremely difficult for us. Goway Travel picked up on our plight and put us in contact with Jacqueline Fagooli, one of their agents. From there on everything was so smooth. Their efficiency, communication, and thoroughness were beyond our expectations. The trip was fabulous and kudos to Jacqueline and Goway for their help in making it so.Carolyn McCormack

The destination specialist I've worked with (Kim Rawlings) has provided exceptional service. She is very knowledgeable of her region and everything they have to offer. She is very prompt in her communication and follow-up. She listens and is very attentive to my client's needs and wants. Kim's personality makes one feel like they've known each other for years. If GoWay had a customer service model, Kim is it.T. Jackson, Tribe Trek Travel

I just returned from escorting 34 people to China with four stops. We had hotels, local guides and extensive daily sightseeing. We had flights and we had high speed rail. There were numerous components that could have gone wrong but did not. I would like to highly recommend local guide Yoyo in Shanghai as well as Kevin in Xian. Two of the best guides I have ever had anywhere in the world. Suzette Castro and her team at the Goway Group Department did an excellent job helping me put this together. I was demanding, they were totally cooperative. It went well. I will be back. Amy Fink, CTC at Blue Ribbon Travel ArrangementsAmy in San Bruno, CA
