Insider Travel Tips

Discover Thailand, where vibrant culture and idyllic beaches await. Often considered the gateway to Southeast Asia, Thailand makes a dazzling first impression. Tropical air, warm hospitality, and boldly flavoured cuisine welcome visitors from the moment they arrive. It’s also one of Asia’s easiest countries to navigate, thanks to excellent infrastructure, experienced local guides, and the widespread use of English in major tourist areas.

Whether you’re drawn to Bangkok’s bustling markets and legendary street food, planning a more spiritual stay in Chiang Mai, or heading south to the islands of PhuketKoh Samui, or Koh Lanta, a little preparation goes a long way.

While many areas of Thailand are refreshingly modern, the country also honours centuries-old traditions. Understanding a few essential Thailand travel tips, from cultural etiquette to practical planning, can make your journey smoother and far more rewarding.

“The Thai people are among the friendliest in the world,” says  Destination Specialist Leo Liu, “and their country is one of the safest.”

Practical Info for Thailand

Many travellers can visit Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa. Citizens of visa-exempt countries, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, simply need to complete the mandatory Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours (three days) before arrival. Longer stays often require applying for a visa in advance, such as a 90-day tourist visa. In all cases, your passport must be valid for at least six months, and you may be asked to show proof of onward travel.

Packing for Thailand is straightforward, but you’ll want to keep both the climate and cultural traditions in mind. Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are ideal for the heat, while modest attire (or a scarf or sarong) to cover your shoulders and knees is required at temples and royal sites like the Grand Palace. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and insect repellent are essentials.

It’s wise to bring a universal power adapter, since Thailand uses a mix of types A, C, F, and newer type O power sockets. Most modern electronics are dual-voltage (100 to 240V), but a voltage converter may be necessary for certain items like hair tools.

The local currency is the Thai baht. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels and restaurants, but cash can be useful for purchases from markets, small businesses, and street-food vendors.

Health and Safety in Thailand

In general, Thailand is one of the safest destinations in Southeast Asia for travellers, but you’ll want to take some basic precautions to avoid any issues.

Before departure, consider visiting a travel medical clinic to ensure routine vaccinations are up to date and to discuss recommended inoculations for travel to Thailand, such as the Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations.

Mosquito-borne illnesses, such as dengue fever, are prevalent in certain regions, particularly during the rainy season (May to September), so it’s always a good idea to pack DEET-based insect repellent and opt for long sleeves or pants in the evenings.

In general, it’s recommended to avoid drinking tap water in Thailand. Stick to bottled or filtered water, which is inexpensive and widely available.

Violent crime against visitors is rare, though petty theft and tourist scams do occur. Staying aware of your surroundings, keeping valuables secure, and exercising caution in late-night drinking areas are usually all that’s needed for a smooth, stress-free trip.

Thailand is generally a safe destination for solo travellers, including solo female travellers, thanks to its reliable infrastructure, diverse transportation options, and strong tourism network. It’s also one of Asia’s most LGBTQ+ friendly countries, with a long-standing culture of openness and acceptance. Bangkok and Phuket have vibrant LGBTQ+ scenes, and same-sex marriage was legalized in 2024.

Culture and Customs in Thailand

Thailand places a high value on good manners, a calm demeanour, and overarching respect for elders, religion, and the monarchy.

Buddhist teachings shape culture and traditions in Thailand. When visiting temples, dress modestly and remove your shoes, hat, and sunglasses before entering. Keep in mind that in Thai culture a person’s head is considered sacred, while the feet are viewed as unclean, so avoid touching anyone’s head or pointing your feet toward people or Buddha images. Monks should not be touched. Instead, keep your distance and greet them with a polite nod and smile.

You’ll often see locals greeting one another with hands pressed together and a slight bow. This is called a “wai,” which is used to say hello, give thanks, apologize, or show respect, particularly to elders and monks. Travellers aren’t expected to master the gesture, but returning a wai is always appreciated. That said, it’s not proper Thai etiquette to wai shopkeepers or servers, with whom a friendly verbal greeting suffices.

One of the most important things to know before going to Thailand is that the Thai monarchy is deeply revered. Travellers are expected to show respect, and strict laws prohibit criticism or mockery of the Royal Family, even in casual conversation or online. This rule extends to anything that bears the king’s image, so never step on banknotes or coins (even to stop them from rolling away). Similarly, travellers should always stand for the national anthem, played daily in public spaces at 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Seasonal Advice for Thailand

Thailand is a year-round destination, with each season offering its own rewards, from cultural festivals to world-class diving. The best time to visit Thailand for ideal weather is generally November through March, during the dry season. With warm, sunny days and lower humidity, it’s a prime time for sightseeing, outdoor adventures, and beach escapes. November is especially appealing for culture lovers, as the famous Loy Krathong and Yi Peng lantern festivals take place under the full moon.

March to May marks Thailand’s summer, when temperatures climb and beach time becomes especially tempting. April brings Songkran, the Thai New Year, celebrated nationwide with exuberant water fights (most famously in Chiang Mai), offering an unforgettable way to cool down in the heat.

The rainy (monsoon) season, from June to October, brings brief but intense showers and higher humidity. That said, the low season (especially from July to September) offers fewer crowds and more affordable travel. One caveat: some Thai islands, like Koh Phi Phi and Koh Pha Ngan, can draw summer break crowds.

Regional weather patterns matter most in Southern Thailand. The islands off the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) are best visited from late October to May, while the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Pha Ngan) enjoy drier and sunnier conditions from June to September.

Must-Sees for First-Time Travellers to Thailand

Thailand’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths, from the misty mountains of the north to the turquoise waters of the south, and plenty of regional draws to plan a trip around.

Most classic Thailand itineraries begin in Bangkok, the country’s dynamic capital. Here, ornate temples like Wat Pho and Wat Arun sit alongside buzzing street markets, rooftop bars, and a dining scene that spans legendary street food to Michelin-starred restaurants. Bangkok also makes an excellent base for day trips to Ayutthaya, the historic capital of the former Siamese kingdom, and Kanchanaburi, home to the historic River Kwai Bridge.

In Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a slower pace and rich cultural rituals tied to the ancient Lanna Kingdom. Known for its serene temples (including Wat Phra That Doi Suthep), verdant mountain scenery, and rich craft traditions, it provides a striking contrast to Bangkok and the Thai islands.

For beach lovers, Phuket, Koh Samui, and Koh Phi Phi combine dramatic landscapes with luxury resorts, calm bays, and immersive experiences, from hands-on cooking classes to sunset cruises aboard traditional long-tail boats. “I highly recommend a Thai cooking class,” says Destination Specialist Leo Liu. “It’s a great way to get a hands-on feel for the culture.”

Food and Dining in Thailand

Thailand’s food and drink scene is remarkably accommodating. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free travellers will find plenty of options, particularly in major cities and popular islands. Phuket even hosts an annual vegetarian festival in September or October. Many dishes can be adapted with tofu or vegetables instead of meat. If avoiding seafood, just be sure to request no fish sauce or oyster sauce.

Travellers with peanut or shellfish allergies should exercise extra caution, as these ingredients are common and cross-contamination can occur in busy kitchens. Carrying a laminated allergy card written in Thai is strongly recommended to avoid miscommunication.

As a general rule, avoid raw vegetables unless dining at reputable restaurants. When sampling street food, stick to cooked favourites like pad Thai, grilled skewers, and soups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travellers should consult a travel clinic before departure to ensure routine vaccinations are up to date. Hepatitis A and typhoid are commonly recommended. Dengue fever is present in Thailand, so mosquito repellent and wearing lightweight long-sleeve shirts and pants are recommended, particularly at dawn and dusk during the rainy season. Stick to bottled or filtered water and avoid drinking the tap water.

Respect for the Thai monarchy and Buddhism is essential. Avoid criticizing or joking about the Royal Family, and be mindful of accidentally defacing any objects that bear the king’s image, including Thai currency. Be sure to stand respectfully during the national anthem, which plays twice daily in public spaces. Dress modestly at temples, remove shoes when required, and maintain a calm and polite demeanor. Thai people often wai (a greeting and expression of respect with hands in prayer and a bowed head), but travellers aren’t expected to return the gesture. A simple smile and gentle nod of the head are appreciated.

Thailand is considered safe for both solo travellers and luxury visitors. Violent crime is rare, and the country has excellent tourism infrastructure. As with anywhere, petty theft and scams can occur, so basic precautions, such as securing valuables and using reputable transportation methods, are recommended.

Visitors should dress modestly, covering their shoulders and knees, and remove shoes, hats, and sunglasses before entering temple buildings. Avoid touching monks or Buddha images, and never turn your back or point your feet toward sacred images. Taking pictures is usually allowed, but flash photography may be prohibited indoors. Always observe posted signs for guidance.

Thailand offers a wide range of comfortable transportation options. Private transfers and chauffeured cars are ideal for ease and efficiency, especially for longer distances. Domestic flights connect major regions quickly, while luxury trains and ferries provide scenic alternatives. In cities, ride-hailing apps and pre-arranged taxis and drivers are the most convenient options.

I found this agency when trying to find a trip to New Zealand and Australia. I never heard of them before, so I had to do some research to make sure they were legit. This trip was going to be seemingly more in cost, so I needed to feel everything was going to go as planned and I was not going to be scammed. I had Natasa Jaric as my Specialist. Her and I worked on an itinerary that suited my needs. She is very friendly and knowledgeable. I had back to back tours for three weeks straight, as well as transfers and hopper flights. This was what I wanted, as this was my " One and Done" for this region. My transportation, hotels, tours and flights went as planned. Of course, Mother Nature dictates some plans and one activity was cancelled. I am getting a refund through the agency. Please book with confidence! This company is reputable and delivers on the itinerary. I had the opportunity to review each part of my itinerary with Natasa prior to leaving to make sure all looked correct. My trip was unforgettable!!! Thank you Goway Travel for making this trip so effortless and smooth.Consumer

Goway gave us a magical holiday in Southeast Asia. From the organization of the transportation, guides and drivers, hotels and tours, everything ran like clockwork with quality accommodations, experienced guides and drivers and amazing excursions. We had a wedding in Bali Indonesia that was the stimulus for visiting 7 countries Cebu Philippines, Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An Vietnam, Siem Reap Cambodia, Bangkok Thailand, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Bali, Indonesia and Taipei, Taiwan. We had marvelous tour guides and drivers. All of them spoke excellent English, had years of experience, were very knowledgeable and passionate about their country and its heritage, very friendly, funny, patient , flexible and accommodating. In Bali we were able to add another tour when we changed hotels and the guide was able to accommodate our friends from Canada to go with us. The drivers were excellent considering the traffic volumes and what we would consider complex driving movements by cars, trucks, bicycles, vespas, tuk tuks and motorcycles. The hotels we were placed in were five stars, with exceptional breakfast which showcased the country's food. We were always able to find ethnic food from that area that we could try. I would highly recommend the Sofitel Legend Metropole in Hanoi. The hotel even has a bunker from the Vietnam War that you can tour if you are staying there. Also the Komaneka at Bisma in Ubud Indonesia was a beautiful property and we were treated like royalty by being placed in a villa with our own swimming pool. All the hotels except one had universal outlets. For any of the Temples whether Buddha or Hindu, churches or Mosques, you need covered shoulders, covered knees and covered toes. Some like Indonesia provide sarongs as part of the entrance fee. For tours the I highly recommend the following: The overnight Ginger Cruise of Halong Bay. The suites were like what you see in the movies of Chinese junket's. You visit a secluded fishing village, the scenery is amazing, the food was excellent and we were taught how to make spring rolls and went squid fishing. The half day cooking class in Cambodia was an amazing experience. We were taken out to a village farm with a multi-generational Cambodian family. The farm had power but no running water. Water was gathered from the river or rainfall. We went to other farms around the village to look at the crops of herbs and vegetables, including rice that were used in the dinner. Also visited the village market for fruits, meats and fish. You were taught how to prepare the foods with the women of the farm while the men set up tables, chairs and lighting for the evening meal. The whole family plus our guide and driver ate the prepared meal under the stars. It was totally awesome. Also don't miss the cooking class at the Blue Elephant in Bangkok. This was a class of 12 students, again with a market tour to select ingredients for what we would be cooking. We prepared four courses which were first demonstrated then we went into a kitchen with stations where each of us prepared that course. Afterwards we sat down to eat the meal that we had prepared. For a different authentic experience The Dark Foodie Tour in Siem Reap by Vespa was one of the highlights of the tour. This tour you spend time with the Cambodian people in the night market, bars and restaurants and even a local fair. You are driven around the city like the locals on Vespa's. You will see lots of temples but two you don't want to miss is Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Wat Suthat in Thailand. Both are astounding and if you get a chance circle back to view the Wat Suthat at night where the lights on the temple show off its beauty. Chris Lawson

We recently enjoyed a tour around Australia arranged by Natasa Jarik at Goway Travel. The trip lasted 10 days, too short to do justice to all of Australia, but enough to give us a taste of a fascinating country. The trip was excellent, exactly what we were looking for. The complicated logistics all worked out smoothly and perfectly. Everything was on time and as advertised. The individual tours were excellent, the guides were absolutely first rate, the accommodations all worked out well (especially the central location of Swissotel in Sydney), and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip. One of the really enjoyable days was day 1, when we arrived early in the morning after a long plane flight from the US and spent the day walking through the parks and gardens and around the harbor in Sydney, visiting a couple of museums, and having a wonderful dinner at a little restaurant around the corner from our hotel. Sydney is a beautiful city! We missed spotting a cassowary in the rain forest, but we saw lots of roos and koalas and emus and dingoes and wombats and crocodiles and wallabies at Kangaroo Island and the Daintree rain forest, snorkeled at the Great Barrier Reef, and enjoyed a very interesting tour around Sydney. The arrangements were handled efficiently and easily. Thank you, Natasa, for arranging a perfect tour for us!Mike Cherry
