You can’t go through life without at least one visit to the world-class city of London. It has such a wealth of attractions that it is doubtful that anyone can spend enough time getting to know all about this amazingly diverse city on an England vacation. It’s a city with a rich history and heritage all on display for visitors as one explores its meandering streets and its many wonderful buildings. London is divided by the majestic River Thames which boasts several famous bridges, the best known being the iconic Tower Bridge and London Bridge.

London’s Greenery

There are a number of Royal Parks spread evenly through the centre of London offering peace and serenity as well as exquisite landscaped beauty. Time can be well spent in Hyde Park, St. James’s Park, Green Park, Kensington Gardens and Regents Park, the latter the home of the London Zoo. Another similar attraction while on a trip to London is the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, one of the most extensive in the world.

Entertainment, Shopping and More

London is known as a major entertainment centre and there is an inordinate number of theatres offering the best in musicals and dramas. There are also many concert halls offering various kinds of music to suit all tastes. Head to the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall or the London Barbican. For opera and ballet aficionados, take in the renowned Royal Opera House near Covent Garden. The quality and quantity of places for shopping in London is something that is rarely rivalled anywhere else in the world. When on London vacations, spend time in the likes of Harrods and Selfridges to see an amazing range of merchandise. For sports fans, there are over 11 soccer teams as well as something for followers of other sports with events taking place all year round. 

The Cultural Scene

For the culturally inclined on an England vacation, London offers a myriad of opportunities to satisfy all interests. For art, visit the Royal Academy of Arts, the National Gallery, the Portrait Gallery, the Tate Modern and the Tate Britain to name just a few. Important museums include the excellent British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum and the Museum of Natural History. There is also Madame Tussauds, a very popular venue to view lifelike waxworks of famous celebrities. The Museum of London offers a journey through history from prehistoric to modern times.  

Dining in London

For dining, London has more than 6000 restaurants catering to all culinary tastes and budgets. There is one custom that is thoroughly British and that is Afternoon Tea, traditionally taken at 4 pm (you don’t have to adhere exactly to this time). What can you expect to be served? It could be a selection of sandwiches, scones, cakes and, of course, tea.

What are the top sights in London?

The list of major attractions would take pages to cover. However, here are some of the 'not to be missed on a trip to England. Buckingham Palace with its daily Changing of the Guard, the Tower of London with its Crown Jewels and the London Eye, a giant Ferris Wheel and a relatively new attraction affording the ability to see the city from a height of 135 metres/445 feet. Another place to view the rooftops of London is the Shard Building in the City of London which is 310 metres/1015 feet tall and is, in fact, the tallest building in the European Union. Trafalgar Square is where the world comes together with the statue of Nelson on his high perch presiding over everyone. The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben are located in Westminster along with Westminster Abbey with its tombstones of the past British monarchy. St Paul’s is not only a fine and exquisitely built large domed church with a long history but a landmark seen from many other parts of London. 

Want to get a feel for the more unique in London? Here are four suggestions for a trip to London. At the Marble Arch end of Hyde Park is Speakers Corner, an open-air area offering entertaining, public speaking and debate often quite hilarious. Portobello Road Street Market at Notting Hill takes place every Saturday and you can pick up unique bargains including antiques and second-hand clothing while being entertained by the stall owners’ lively banter. Covent Garden converted from a fruit and vegetable market to an all-day long entertainment and activity centre and offers shops, cafes, restaurants and street entertainers daily. The Churchill War Rooms were wartime cabinet rooms situated in a bunker and are now a fascinating museum.

London Day Trips

If only visiting London on a UK, vacation, you can take advantage of several day trips to important tourist centres such as Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, the university cities of Oxford and Cambridge and Stratford upon Avon. You will find the rest of England to be very different so bear in mind, if you only visit London, you haven’t seen England.
