Take a trip to Lake Titicaca on your Peru Vacation
If on a Peru vacation and heading here, Lake Titicaca is found in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. Regarding the volume of water, it is considered the largest lake in South America with the western part of the lake in the Puno Region of Peru and the eastern side in the La Paz Department of Bolivia.
The lake and surrounding area were sacred to the Inca civilization and played a major role in their mythology. It is believed that the first Inca king, Manco Capac was born there and that the god Viracocha came out of the lake and created the world, the sun, the stars and the first people. In 1978 the Titicaca Reserve was created with the goal of preserving the native flora and fauna and maintaining the area’s natural beauty.
