Brussels apart from being the capital of Belgium is also the capital of the European Union, due mainly to its geographical location. It is a thriving metropolis offering both historical and contemporary attractions. Its location in the centre of the country makes it, together with its excellent rail services, an excellent place from which to travel to other important tourist destinations on a Belgium vacation.

Brussels is a bilingual city but with a predominance of French speakers as opposed to Flemish. All streets have two names, one for each language. Gastronomically, Brussels has an outstanding reputation for excellent cuisine. Some of its specialties are mussels, waffles and French fries par excellence.

There are a number of neighbourhoods in Brussels. The centre of the city is old with much ambience and character. The near-lying suburb of Marolles has a daily flea market at Place du Jeu de Balle. Ixelles is a neighbourhood featuring a large choice of restaurants, bars and bookshops. St-Gilles is the city’s bohemian quarter, home to artists and students alike. Uccle is a charming medieval district with narrow streets, tiny squares and small townhouses.

Major tourist attractions on a Belgium vacation include the Grand Place in the heart of Brussels with its 300-year-old ornate buildings – a true spectacle when brightly illuminated at night, the Town Hall, the Infamous Manneken Pis, the bronze statue of a little boy urinating dating back to the 1600s, The Royal Palace and the Atomium, a stainless steel sphere 100metres/335 feet tall symbolizing an atom magnified 165 billion times.

Other attractions are the city’s numerous parks and the buildings of the European Parliament. Brussels has over 80 museums to satisfy all interests. Some of the major institutions include the Museum of the City of Brussels, the Royal Museum of Art and History with its worldwide treasures, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts featuring both traditional works by the masters and modern art, the Natural Science Museum of Belgium with its collection of dinosaurs, the Musical Instrument Museum with its 7000 instruments and the Musee Magritte showcasing Belgium’s best known modern painter. A specialty exhibition is Mini Europe, a theme park featuring miniature replicas of many European landmarks and icons.

Just to stroll around Brussels is to enjoy a city with many colourful, visual attractions on a Belgium vacation.
