Lapland Tours & Vacation Packages

  • Lapland, Finland
  • Snowfall in Finland
  • Aurora borealis in Lapland, Finland

When on Finland vacations, visit Lapland which includes parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The Finnish portion is one of the most important for tourism. Although it covers 30% of the country (the northern part), it only has 3% of the country’s population. The largest towns are Rovaniemi, the capital, Tornio and Kemi. Lapland has its own indigenous population called the Sami who have their own language. In Finland, the Sami population is approximately 6 000 in number and the preservation of their endangered language and culture is monitored by the local Finnish government.

Some of the sights and special phenomena on Finland vacations include the Midnight Sun. Daylight is experienced all summer long as the sun travels in a circle in the sky above Lapland. Nothing beats viewing the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Finland is one of the best places on Earth to do this as they appear on more than 200 nights a year in Finnish Lapland.

Finland will tell you that Rovaniemi in Lapland is where Santa Claus lives. This is borne out by the “official” Santa Claus village built on the Arctic Circle. Actually, Rovaniemi is 10 kilometres/6 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The post office here receives over half a million letters each year from children around the world. You can look at a selection of the letters and you can send postcards bearing an “official” Santa Claus stamp. The city has a number of hotels and restaurants and tourism is very important as a source of income. The Arktikum is a very comprehensive museum and houses exhibits showcasing Lapland culture and artifacts.

The Ranua Wildlife Park is a zoo in Ranua and is the northernmost zoo in the world with its collection of 50 wild animal species and 200 individual animals such as lynx, brown bears and wolves, European moose and deer. It has Finland's only polar bears living in artificial snow.

A very popular pastime in Lapland on Finland vacations is to stay at an Igloo Hotel (or Ice Hotel), where no matter how cold it is outside, you will be warm and comfortable inside, in a sleeping bag made of reindeer skins. There are a number of these establishments in Lapland. These include the Snow Castle in Kemi, the Arctic Snow Hotel 25 kilometres/15 miles from Rovaniemi, the Lainio Snow Village near Yllas, the Hotel Kakslauttanen in the Saariselka region and the Hetta Snow Castle situated in Vuollikka.
