Lake Malawi Tours, Vacations, Travel Packages & Experiences
Lake Malawi, originally known as Lake Nyasa, is located on the eastern side of Malawi and was discovered by the missionary-explorer Dr David Livingstone just over 150 years ago. It is bordered by Mozambique and Tanzania and one third of the lake’s area belongs to Mozambique to be enjoyed on a Malawi vacation. It is the 9th largest lake in the world, the third largest in Africa and one of the deepest lakes anywhere. It is also home to more species of fish than any other lake.
Lake Malawi is one of the main attractions in Malawi because of its beaches and islands. Resorts offer a wide range of activities such as snorkeling, diving, sailing, water skiing, camping and trips to the islands located along the lake.
Lake Malawi National Park is a national park located at the southern end of Lake Malawi. It is the only national park in Malawi that was created to protect fish and aquatic habitats. Despite this, Lake Malawi National Park does include a fair amount of land including several small islands in Lake Malawi. It is home to animals such as baboons. The graves of five early missionaries are also found in the park. The many endemic fish species make it a key example of specialized evolution. For this reason, it was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and should be included in a Malawi vacation.
